Writing Assignment 2- Drug Use in Modern Sport
“ Top athletes whether their motivation arises from adherence to the internal values of competition or desire for external reward, are willing to pay a heavy price in time and effort in order to achieve competitive success” (Robert Simon). We all live in a society where winning is over emphasized. Losing is hard and so is winning. Many athletes as we have seen go to extreme limits to do whatever it takes to win. Some athletes would spend long hours, days in the gym exercising or working out to get their bodies to where they want it to be. Others put so much effort and time in training on the specific sport they are playing in order to achieve a better performance. Yet, there are those athletes who turn to steroids/ performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) to improve or enhance their performance. Barry Bonds and Manny Ramirez are two examples of the several athletes who are in the news who use steroids or other PEDs. Manny Ramirez, who is a baseball player for the Red Socks, retired after testing positive for drug test. Barry Bonds who is a former major league baseball player allegedly lied to a federal grand jury about knowingly taking performance-enhancing drugs and about being injected by anyone but his doctors.
