Africa is four times the size of the United States and is second only to Asia in size. It is unique in that it is the most centrally located continent in the world, being almost equally cut in half by the equator and the prime meridian. It is fitting that it's also the continent where it is believed that mankind originated from.
This fascinating continent is separated from Europe by the Mediterranean Sea and from much of Asia by the Red Sea. Africa is joined to Asia in the northeast by Egypt to the Isthmus of Suez, which is transected by the Suez Canal. If it wasn't joined to Asia by this tiny strip of land, Africa would be an island. It also has the shortest coastline of any continent in the world, due to the fact that Africa has few jagged coastlines.
Africa is also unique in that it is as broad as it is high and is the most tropical continent in the world. Both the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn run through Africa.Africa has fifty-three countries, which are: * Algeria * Angola * Benin * Botswana * Burkina Faso * Burundi * Cameroon * Cape Verde * Central African Rep * Chad * Congo * Dem. Rep. Congo (Zaire) * Djibouti * Egypt * Equatorial Guinea * Eritrea * Ethiopia * Gabon * Gambia * Ghana * Guinea Bissau * Guinea * Ivory Coast * Kenya * Lesotho * Liberia * Libya * Madagascar * Malawi * Mali * Mauritania * Mauritius * Morocco * Mozambique * Namibia * Niger * Nigeria * Reunion * Rwanda * São Tomé and Principe * Senegal * Seychelles * Sierra Leone * Somalia * South Africa * Sudan * Swaziland * Tanzania * Togo * Tunisia * Uganda * Zambia * Zanzibar * Zimbabwe |
