This is an argumentative essay about two different styles of philosophies. I will analyze the work of both John Locke and Thomas Hobbes and compare the two philosophers. I believe that John Locke’s philosophy is more suitable to mankind because he has more of an open mind for what’s good for people, while Hobbes is just too critical.
John Locke was an English philosopher in the Enlightenment Period (17th century). Locke was a man of his word influenced by Isaac Newton. Locke believed that the human sensation: taste, touch, smell, sound and sight fills the empty brain at birth. John Locke had a theory that humans have the same knowledge at birth (Tabula Rasa). In addition, he believed that all human beings should be educated no matter how wealthy or poor. More importantly, he believed that natural law means that people were created equally.
Thomas Hobbes was born in 1588 and quickly became a well-educated man who was a well-known philosopher. John Locke arrived midway through Hobbes’ life even though they both had their own ideas. Thomas Hobbes believed that there should be one ruler and he is the Leviathan (which means sea monster) who is ‘unchallengeable’. I disagree with Hobbes because he thinks that a human being’s nature is of greed and selfishness; and that if the king’s rules were broken, one committed treason.
In closing, John Locke’s philosophy is more suitable to mankind because his is easier to understand and he has an open-mind for what’s good, fair and non-violent. For example, he believed that inequality of the people was a result of the environment that they were forced to live in. The most convincing piece of evidence is that humans had a natural right to protect their independence. As a result, society is much more tolerable. If it weren’t for the civilized world adopting Locke’s philosophy, it would be run under...
