Essay- Journeys are to learn.

A journey can be defined as movement from one place to another, this place may be physical or imaginative or both. Most journeys include evolution for the person either physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Learning can be the sole reason for a journey, a part of a journey, or not involved in a journey at all. Therefore a journey can be undertaken with the purpose of leaning however there are various other reasons for a Journey being undertaken including enjoyment, escape, self discovery, or change.
The poem going back on a hot night by Robert grey involves a physical journey through the movement from one place to another location but also an imaginative journey as he escapes from the boredom of his long train journey, the text presents the aspect that learning can be part of the journeying process however journeying may also be for escape or changed.   This is shown in stanza 3 through the use of metaphor “with the moonlight stacked up teetering“   the personas use of imagination is emphasised consequently reinforcing the aspect that journeys may be to simply escape reality and that the imagination can be used to assist in achieving this. The poet also uses various other techniques to highlight the aspect of journey in both the physical and imaginative journey Visual imagery such as “yellow kitchen; smoke; the pond-life of stars” alerts the reader to the boredom the persona is experiencing therefore through the imaginative journey he has the opportunity to escape reality in order to avoid boredom. These techniques have helped me to consider that learning can be part of the journeying process however journeying may also be for escape or changed. This aspect of journey can be compared to the book Luke’s way of looking by Nadia Wheatly as Luke escapes into a fantasy world in order to avoid the boredom of reality.   Luke views his environment from a colourful fantastical perspective whereas those around him see only what is directly...
