A&P Plot Overview
Three teenage girls, wearing only their bathing suits, walk into an A&P grocery store in a small New England town. Sammy, a young man working the checkout line, watches them closely. He appraises their looks and notes even minute details about the way they carry themselves. He also speculates about their personalities and their motivation for entering the store dressed the way they are. Sammy is particularly interested in the most attractive girl, who appears to be the leader of the group. This girl, whom Sammy dubs “Queenie,” has a natural grace and confidence, in addition to her beauty. As the girls roam the aisles of the A&P, they create a stir. As Sammy points out, the store is in the center of town, nowhere near the beach, where the girls’ attire would attract less notice. Sammy’s coworker Stokesie ogles the girls as well, joking around with Sammy as he does so. Sammy jokes along with him, but he feels the contrast between himself, still single, and the married Stokesie. Stokesie is resigned to a life of working at the A&P, whereas Sammy, although admitting that he and Stokesie are much alike, seems to feel that such a future is beneath him. As yet another of his coworkers begins to admire the girls, Sammy feels a twinge of pity for them for having compromised themselves this way, most likely without realizing it. This feeling is quickly supplanted by pure excitement as the girls choose Sammy’s checkout line to make their purchase.
Lengel, the store manager, approaches Sammy’s checkout lane. Lengel chastises the girls for entering the store in bathing suits, citing store policy. The girls are embarrassed, and Queenie protests that her mother wanted her to come in and buy some herring snacks. In this statement, Sammy gleans insight into Queenie’s life. He imagines her parents at a party, everyone dressed nicely and sipping “drinks the color of water.” He thinks about his own parents’ parties, where people

Sammy has a good head on his shoulders, but he ends up making the mistake of adjusting his morals and ideals in order to justify his lustfulness towards the women in skimpy bikinis. Sammy struggles with the common battle of good versus evil, and right versus wrong. He knows he should not be lusting after women, but he partakes in it anyway. He spends all this time observing every detail and even starts to imagine the lives of these women. The audience would suspect that Sammy is a supporter of respecting women and women’s rights by some of his actions. He even becomes flustered when the store manager confronts the girls in front of everyone over their appearances. However, Sammy refers to some female customers as “houseslaves in pin curlers”. It is ironic that he degrades some women in this way, while he is engrossed on others. Sammy contradicts himself through his actions. This reveals that Sammy is a young man who is struck by lust. He does not realize that the women he idolizes is on the same platform as the women he mocks for their gender related roles. He is bending his morals and ideals on women to make sure the women he marvels at get the good end of the stick. The young, attractive women, which he puts on a pedal stool, are equivalent to the average, everyday housewives. Both sets of women deserve respect and he is only giving it to the ones that fits his visual…

Maybe to meet a girl or get a new higher paying job but for now, it’s just another day at work. At least until it all changes when three beautiful women enter the store wearing nothing but bathing suits which is the inciting incident for Sammy. He is so love-struck with awe that he mistakenly rings up a box of HiHo crackers twice and gets heck for it by the customer “I ring it up again and the customer starts giving me hell” (440). He goes on describing the women in very peculiar ways as chubby, tall, and the queen. He describes the queen as the leader of the pack, teaching the other women how to gain attraction and to look like you know what you are doing, as she is the one who made them go in with her in the first place. Other than the fact of being in bathing suits, Sammy is drawn to the queen not only cause of her beauty, but because of the fact that her top was just slouching against her chest with the straps resting down her arms. This overwhelmed Sammy and made her more than pretty “With the straps pushed off, there was nothing between the top of her suit and the top of her head except her. I mean, it was more than pretty” (441). As Sammy is watching the three ladies, they notice him and his coworker staring at them but they don’t mind as they continue on shopping going…

The setting plays a large part to the understanding of why the “three girls” in “bathing suits” are so criticized and judged. In “A&P” by John Updike, Sammy takes a strong interest in the girls in their bathing suits that come into the supermarket he works at. It is clear that he views the girls in a sexual way by the way he describes Queenie from her “white prima donna legs” (1), to the way the straps of her bathing suit “were off her shoulders looped loosely around the cool tops of her arms” (1) causing her suit to slide down a little, how when she “turned so slow it made [his] stomach rub the inside of [his] apron” (2), how cute it was when she lifted “a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top” (3) and her friend whom he “liked better from the back” because she had “a really sweet can” (3). Sammy was so infatuated with them, noticing every detail about each of the girls, that he wanted them to notice him too. When the manager of the supermarket embarrasses them for wearing bathing suits, Sammy uses this opportunity to get their attention and ultimately impress them. Sammy says he quits “quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch [him], their unsuspected hero” (4). He doesn’t stop to think about how quitting his job will affect his parents and his future; he only cares about impressing the girls and getting them to notice him. After his action he realized “how hard the world was going to be to [him] hereafter” (5) over girls that ended up not noticing him or being impresses and…

“A & P” is a short fictional story by John Updike about the three girls who walks in A&P, a grocery store, outfitted in a bathing suit. The stories illustrate about the reaction and assumption of the people in the store, and later Legel, the manager forced the girls to get out of the store for their inappropriate appearance. The narrator, Sammy, and then stand up for the unfair behavior done toward the girls and happen to quit his job at the end of the story. After analyzing the story I came to an extend that writer is trying to give us an idea about the discrimination in gender, improper utilization of the power, lack of behavior and judgment in that time of period.…
