If someone were to ask me how my childhood was, I could easily tell them that it was an extremely happy one. Both my parents were hard working and taught me and my brother by setting a good example. My dad was a flooring installer and had only a 6th grade education. He didn’t grow up in the best environment and he escaped from that life the first chance he had. He worked very hard so my brother and I would never have to know the hardships he had to endure. The way he showed his love was by working hard for us. He was never the type to really give hugs or kisses, but we just knew he loved us. When he did show affection it made us cherish it even more. My mom was a nurse that had worked her way through nursing school when we were little children. My dad always told her not to stop her schooling because he knew she was smart enough to attain her Registered Nurse certification. He also knew that it was more lucrative to become an RN instead of the LPN that she had become. My mom also had a rough upbringing. I hear her tell me how my grandmother never told my aunts and uncle that she loved them or showed them any real affection. She did not want to raise us that way; she wanted to make us feel important and loved. We had a daily hug and kiss from her. To this day, I feel so close to my mother and I have adopted her style of parenting towards my own children. I don’t want them to ever feel insignificant or unimportant. On the other hand, my mother sheltered me a bit. I wouldn’t use the word spoiled in any manner, but I did usually get what I wanted. Don’t get me wrong though, I had 2 jobs when I was 15 up until I turned 17 or so. She and my dad saw me work very hard and they rewarded me for it. My brother has a learning disability so my mom just became more close to me because she was so busy working with him most times.
