English Composition was one of my nightmares when I was in community college. However, my writing skill was affect positively by the materials and the instructor of this class. After spending a semester for this class, my writing was extremely improved, and I could understand more about my writing style as well as my strengths and weaknesses.
. My instructor was super hard among the instructors in English Department of the college I attended. In her class, she treats all students as the same level: advance writing and reading skill. At first, I was really suffering from her teaching style because it was completely different from my ESL classes before.   There were 4 major essays and 1 research paper in this class. The main purpose of this course is to teach students how to write a strong and logical essay to express, support, and demonstrate their opinions toward the controversial issues that take most of the attention of the society. I remember that I received a D on my first essay with 64 grammatical errors, and her comment “you should reduce your errors by 4 per page, otherwise you are not going to pass this class.” I was shocked. By being warned of high percentage of failing, I was trying like a person who is fighting for his life. In class, I listened to her lecture carefully and did all the assignments at home. As a result, I started to catch up the materials that she covered in class and feel comfortable sitting in the room. After 6 to 8 weeks of the semester, I started to like her lecture and her teaching style. The ways I used to improve my writing were learning the structure of each type of the essays, creating outline, proofread. On the second essay, my grammatical errors were reduced, but it still needed improvement and attention. Surprisingly, I received an A for my last paper, and the grammatical errors of that paper were 7. After the course, my writing skill was improved.
