The True American
Being an American means something different to each and every one of the citizens in this country. The ideal American must possess a vast range of skills, values, and beliefs. To understand the core values of the ideal American there must be a true understanding of America. America is a melting pot of all of the nations on this earth, and because of that there is a vast range of ideals and values weaved into t society. As a successful citizen of this country there are certain ideals and values one must embrace at their core. “The American Dream is the spark that animates American life, the promise held out to youngsters and immigrants that hard work will result in security and prosperity.” (Jillson 1) The sky is the limit when it comes to possibilities in America, so with the right foundation anyone can achieve monumental success. In order to achieve success an ideal American should embrace certain ideals and values such as being a dreamer, being determined, and being courageous.

The ideal American must be a dreamer in order to inspire and create things that will change the world. In “Engineers: Ignore Critics, Follow Your Dreams, Change The World” John Cioffi writes, “My efforts were often ridiculed and criticized, but since no one provided me a technically sound reason to the contrary, I continued.” (Savitz 1) The ideal American would be a dreamer because they would want to change their society and the world for the better. Americans are not only concerned about what is contained within the borders, but they understand a win for the world is a win for America as well. Dreamers are the component of society who never sit idle and accept things as they are currently. They know there is something better on the horizon, and they do not allow anyone to get in their way of finding the solution or discovering the technology. John Cioffi knew he was on the cusp of something great, and because he did not listen to the opposition he developed the technology of DSL. To fully embrace your inner dreamer one must accept that just because no one else understands or accepts your ideas does not mean they are not worth following.

Being a dreamer allows the mind to operate free of road blocks which is how one can achieve success. America embraces its citizens and does not discourage independent thinking like other countries. One must embrace the fact that America does not put limitations on the thoughts of its people, and instead of following the path of least resistance follow the path less taken. In “Engineers: Ignore Critics, Follow Your Dreams, Change The World” John Cioffi offers this advice, “If you believe in your dreams and make them a reality, the world will get the message. One person who truly believes can move mountains.” (Savitz 1) This advice from John Cioffi is invaluable. Most Americans are skeptical because not everyone embraces their inner dreamer, so the ideal American must never allow the skeptics to create roadblocks in their thoughts. No one was laughing when Henry Ford produced the first Model T or when Thomas Edison invented the first practical light bulb. This is an example of two American dreamers who did not allow anything to get in the way of their creative genius. Let the foolish sit back and criticize while the ideal American powers on to change everything through dreams. The ideal American should have fiery determination rooted in their soul to carry them through life. In “The road to success comes through hard work, determination, and personal sacrifice” Duane Bemis writes, “"DETERMINATION" means that you look at yourself and make no excuses.” (Bemis 1) The ideal American must never make excuses for themself. Every mistake or misstep taken in life is valuable in the path to success, because one gains a wealth of knowledge that might have otherwise eluded them. Determination means maintaining the path one has set out on no matter what happens along the way....
