A Rescue at U.N. Headquarters, as Others Wait and Hope
    An earthquake hit hard in Haiti’s capital Port-Au-Prince. The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki moon, made his first visit to Haiti since the earthquake that flattened much of the capital UN support victims in this time of tragedy.
      One of the United Nations officials was missing from the Christopher Hotel, the mission’s collapsed headquarters, was pulled alive from the debris, five days later.   A staff member, Jens Kristensen of Denmark, was pulled alive from the rubble of the Christopher Hotel.
    The agency has lost dear loved ones. Many officials have lost all their belongings. The first days after the quake United Nations workers slept on the streets with their Haitian neighbors to protect them from gangs.
    “We need more than cookies,” said Solly Lazard, 37, referring to the rations that were distributed in Peguyville, where residents had erected plastic hovels in the clearing above where their houses once stood. “You see where we live? We have no water, no toilets, no food.” Water was getting scare and food was short.   (Thompson & MacFarquhar , 2010, para. 11)
    According to Solly Lazard, 37, more than rations are needed, where residents have plastic hovels to represent where their homes once resided. Considering our living space we have no water or food. (Thompson & MacFarquhar , 2010)
    Hundreds of ravenous people gathered around the convoy, shoving their way to the trucks loaded with rations. Looking at the mob, Mr. Lazard said, “If people go too long without food, they will fight for it.” Haiti needs to be recovered and the people there need relief. (Thompson & MacFarquhar , 2010, para. 12)
