1) Briefly explain the impact of genetic and environmental factors on the development of personality. How might each of the models covered in this course (psychoanalytic, neopsychoanalytic, developmental, humanistic, and behavioral) address the issue of genetics vs. environment, as it relates to personality development?
There are multiple genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the development of personality. Human personality could stem from social, economic and religious experiences as well as genetic composition. A child who has been abused could grow up with a dominate personality and/or an abusive personality. This could be considered a learned behavior. With genetic composition of ones behavior could stem directly from development, humanistic and behavioral factors. Alfred Adler believed that environmental influences that stem from parent relationships, social environments and culture can participate in the development of personality. His theory is based on ones need to maintain ones own self-esteem, prestige and power. In regards to birth order, it also plays a role with personality development. The youngest child may endure issues of living up to the role of their older siblings. They may strive to be exactly the same or not, and may also require much more attention.
2) How might learning, parental, and development factors each contribute to the development of self-efficacy (the tendency to work toward self-actualization)?
Per Bandura, self-efficacy is proposed as a belief in ones capability to organize and execute actions needed to succeed at a goal. Efficacy is synonymous with being in control of ones behavior and ones identity. This means that each individual has their own self-efficacy to control their actions to obtain the requested goal.
