Movies have always been a way to escape the world for a little while. Comedies, action films, and even horror; what happens in movies doesn’t always happen in real life, but sometimes it does. They open doors to the past, present, and future. I just finished watching the movie Elizabeth (1998) and the funny thing is I actually learned. Elizabeth is a great movie because while being entertaining it shows many of the 6 main themes of AP World History. War, violence, and religion are all parts of this movie, each part of a different theme. Now I would like to explain how this movie relates to World History. The first theme this movie relates to would be number 5; Cultural, intellectual, and religious developments, including interactions among and within society. Religion both jumps out at you and this thrown at you many times during the course of this movie. The opening scene is 3 people being punished for being against the Catholic religion, and their fate is death. After being thrown in jail, they are burned to death whiles everyone watches, no one helps them. This was a very common way to punish someone. Another way religion was related was because England at the time was mostly Catholic but there were two religions present. Protestant as well as Catholic and anyone who wasn’t Catholic was seen as heretic (someone who went against the correct religion). ‘There is only one Christ, Jesus, one faith. All else is a dispute over trifles.”- Queen Elizabeth. Queen Mary Elizabeth’s half sister is very sick and tries everything possible to keep her from the throne. Elizabeth was not catholic and for that she was also seen as a heretic. Despite being arrested and accused of treason she still is proclaimed Queen following Mary’s death. Before the former queen died Elizabeth made a promise. That when asked to uphold the Catholic fate, she would rule however her heart decided.
