Elements of Design the Black Swan
The scene and film that I have chosen for this assignment is The Fitting, from Black Swan. Production design was by Therese DePrez, art direction by David Stein, and Directed by Darren Aronofsky, his role in the film I will be describing at the end.
Firstly the production designer, in this film as in most films works directly with the director and producer, he also directs in a way a core group of people so that the backgrounds and style of the cast and set tell a kind of visual story. The main group of people he leads consist of the costume designer, hair and make-up stylists, special effects director and the locations manager.
As art director one must oversee, and assign tasks to production, set and lighting designers, which also includes prop master, graphic designers, costume designers. It is the art directors’ job as I stated before to assign task, but ultimately it his main goal is to oversee and make sure that the director’s vision for the movie is brought to life.
A director is most easily described as the key link these production designers, art directors and the people they have assigned, as well as being able to take a film’s written script and adding images, sounds, a cast, crew, location. He also manages the camera, sound lighting design and special effects. “We see what the director wants us to see at the precise time and for just as long as he wants us to see it.” (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. Lighting in this particular scene were used to keep a darker setting in the background, to portray that they were back stage, also I felt it was also to portray that Nina Sayers, who is played by Natalie Portman, was in a very dark place emotionally at this part of the film; I felt that the lighting would open...
