1. Explain where an employee can reasonably expect to have privacy in the workplace. 

Every employee has the right to privacy in the workplace. However, right to privacy doesn’t imply secrecy of actions in work place, the right to use the work place for private affairs, moon lighting, and work covertly against the interests of the organization, work on their private business during employer’s time or use privacy to indulge in activities that violate corporate policies on employee’s conduct.
Employees should be provided with private space to carry out their official tasks in a dignified manner. This includes dealing with clients or prospects in a discrete manner without overt or covert overseeing by boss or colleagues. The work place ambience including private space for conducting business, helps build confidence and respect of the other party, employee’s self esteem is protected, the client respects the employee, employee enjoys a sense of autonomy and being respected by his boss, employee believes he is in control and accountable for his actions.

Privacy is also needed when sensitive matters are discussed, when an employee is being reprimanded for his/her actions, when internal business matters are discussed, where dissemination of information should be on a need to know basis or where matters of strategic importance are discussed, if a client demands confidentiality on a matter, where matters of commercial interest such as policies, competitor actions, bidding for jobs, future plans,   handling specific issues, where matters pertain to personal matters of individual employees such as conduct, performance and family. Privacy instills confidence, helps build mutual confidence, establish rapport and even helps close deals that are in the interest of the company itself.
