Essay: Electronic Industry Code of Conduct
Question: The EICC is designed for the electronics industry. Choose another industry and discuss how the EICC would need to be changed to apply to your industry and if the EICC would be an effective tool in your industry. I choose automotive industry as there are so many similarities. Labor conditions in the car industry can be so harsh that the work is physically demanding and involves exposure to noise, chemicals and dust. EICC can be a good example for guaranteeing humane and safe working environment for the EICC code of conduct is “committed to uphold the human rights of workers, and to treat them with dignity and respect as understood by the international community.” However, two points can be added to apply to the automotive industry. One is to provide equal employment opportunity. To achieve the sustainability of the industry as well as the whole society, the minority and female empowerment shall be highly emphasized. The other is to develop advanced training and qualification program. For automotive company, the development is beneficial for both the employers and the employees. Good labor practices enhance the quality of the vehicles and the production efficiency which is necessary for long-term development of the company as there will be lower deficiency rate and higher reputation. For employees, advanced training ensures more safety and secure working environment. Beside, EICC sets good standards for issues over environmental, ethics and management system. Environmental standards like pollution prevention and resource reduction, air emissions and content restrictions could be so effective tools in the automotive industry to realize green supply chain. Needless to say, the code of conduct on ethics and management system is universal to any industry as could be applied to the automotive industry.
