James Clerk Maxwell discovered the electromagnetic spectrum in 1862. The electromagnetic spectrum is a map of all the types of light that can be identified. It classifies different types of light by wavelength to show how much energy the wave has. The more energy the wave has the shorter the wavelength and the less energy a waves has the longer the wavelength. Not all light is in the visible spectrum. There are many kinds of electromagnetic waves that you can't see. When you turn on your radio, watch TV, send a text message, use a microwave, you are using electromagnetic energy. You depend on this energy every hour of every day. Starting with the shortest wavelength out of the seven on the spectrum is gamma rays. Gamma Rays are extremely powerful and they kill on contact. They are used mostly for warfare, mass destruction and chemotherapy to help cure cancer. However gamma rays cannot penetrate steel and lead compounds. Also the only living organism which can survive these rays are cockroaches. Gamma rays are radioactive just like bananas. Bananas are radioactive because they contain relatively high amounts of potassium. They contain potassium-40, which is a radioactive isotope of potassium. e light. Starting off with the lonest wavelength is red then its orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and lastly with the shortest wavelength is violet.
