El Camino de Santiago

“The Way” is one of the most inspirational movies I have ever witnessed. It centers around a man, his son, and their journey along the Camino de Santiago. Tom, an esteemed Doctor, learns that his son has passed away in a storm while traveling along the Camino de Santiago. The movie shows scenes of the father-son relationship between Tom, and his son and it quickly becomes clear that the two did not always see eye-to-eye. Tom learns that his son has passed away, and immediately travels to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to gather the remains of his son. Upon his arrival, he soon decides that he has some unfinished business to complete. Rather than go home, and continue to live an unsatisfying life, he decides to make the journey along the Camino in order to honor his son’s aspiration to travel this historic pilgrimage. In the beginning, Tom is simply going on the Journey for his son’s sake, but as the journey progressed, it becomes clear that everyone has his or her own reason to travel the Camino. Along the journey, Tom meets a few interesting people, and soon creates an everlasting bond with them. The group comes across many obstacles and hardships along the way but eventually reach the end of the Camino. Near the end of the movie, it is clear that Tom has gained much for himself along this journey, and finally discovers the true difference between the life we live and the life we choose. On the walk home after the movie, I realized how much I learned. Although I learned quite a bit about the Camino de Santiago, pilgrimages, and the story of The Way, I was also able to learn a lot about myself. I feel that everyone can relate to at least one of the five main characters, and I was no different. I found that after watching Tom progress throughout the movie, I realized that I too need to realize what really matters in life, and learn to be able to move past the little things.
