Effects of Returning to School 2

Returning to School

There are many reasons as to why I have decided to return to school. There are many

positive as well as negatives effects with my decision to return to school. Within my essay I will

be discussing why I have decided to return to school, as well as the benefits I will gain from

earning my degree. There will certainly be some lifestyle changes that I may be faced with. I will

go over some lifestyle changes that I have already begun to change within my life in order to

focus on obtaining my degree. Furthermore, I will also mention certain obstacles and strategies

I will need to overcome to successfully complete my degree program.

Returning to school was one of the hardest decisions that I have had to make thus far.

There was once a time where I was bouncing from one school to another, indecisive as to what I

wanted to major in. At first I thought about becoming an Ultrasound Technician, so I went to

Sanford Brown however attending this school did not turn out well. I became unfocused

I was unemployed and a single parent. I jumped around a couple other different schools taking

up a variety of degree programs I thought interested me, upon starting my classes, I began see

that what I had taken up was not what I really wanted to do in life. Therefore I stopped going to

school altogether, since I was confused as to what I wanted to do in life. Time seemed to lapse,

I found myself with another child and decided that the time is now to make an example of myself

for my children.

I have always been a keen and good learner, and academically bright. My decision to

educate, enhance myself, in my professional life, as well as be a good example to my children

compelled, and pursued me to return to school. I have always envisioned myself getting my

Bachelor’s degree but somehow the timing never seemed to be right for me. I see education as a

better way of obtaining and gaining knowledge in order to prepare for the corporate world that I

will be faced with.

I believe coming back to school will change my outlook to professional life. It will certainly give me a degree where I will be able to utilize my skills to help other people in the

world. One of other main reasons for returning to school is my two beautiful, wondering

children whom I love dearly. Being as though I am an African- American, single parent have to

set the standards, and bars high not only for myself but my children as well. As statics put it

the percentage of African-American single parents graduating college is forty-eight percent.

In 2010, 18.2 of every 100 U.S. blacks in that age bracket had a bachelor’s degree, compared to

14.3 Of every 100 in 2000. (The journal of blacks in higher Education, 2006) I want to

a prime example that anyone can excel, and get ahead in life no matter what obstacles you are

faced with.

Returning back to school has many benefits such as, a college degree, financial security,

and job security. In my opinion, if you do not have a college degree in today’s world and are

working, you are basically working a dead end job. Yet, there are many people who have

college degrees whom can’t...
