Effects of Technology on Society
Effects of Technology On Society Technology is detrimental to society today because of the effects it has on children and teens that carry over into their entire lives. The harmful effects are only growing as technology grows with it. The different effects of technology are causing problems for this demographic in regards to social media, television, news, and streaming music. These aspects present in multitude of ways many times a day for any given person, making it difficult to ignore them and not be affected. Technology has been known to cause disorders, social problems, and change core values. Therefore, it has a negative effect on our society. One effect technology has on people is that of cyber bullying. This would not be possible without the internet. It not only makes it easier for bullies to reach their prey, but also makes it easier to broadcast it to a larger scale of personnel. Denise Mann from WebMD states, “Unlike traditional bullying, which largely relies on physical threats, rumors, and exclusion, cyber bullies can reach larger audiences via social media and other technology, making it difficult for the intended victim to escape their bullies. Cyber bullies can also do so relatively anonymously” (Mann). Mann continues that victims of cyber bullying, as well as the cyber bully himself, have been known to have emotional problems along with rebellion and random outbreaks throughout their lives. Because the internet makes it easier for bullies to reach out and continue to harm others, more and more people fall victim to the cyber-bullying epidemic. Family values have seemed to weaken the more technology has grown. Children and teens have become so caught up in the technological world that it is changing the way they view their family and its values. Their basis of learning has changed from that of their parents, making it harder for the members of the family to understand each other. Pediatric Occupational Therapist Cris Rowan reports, “Technology's impact on the 21st century family is fracturing its very foundation, and causing a disintegration of core values that long ago were the fabric that held families together” (Rowan). The information the web holds is not all “good”. There are many crude adult sites that younger children can easily access. These sites, along with many other blogs and posts, take away from a child’s core foundation meant to be set by the parents of the household, creating a technological wall between kids and their parents. This wall causes the concept of traditional parenting to weaken and evolve into a much more media based lifestyle that kids become engulfed in. The effect of technology, especially an over-use of technology, on the developing child has been seen to be very harmful, even causing disabilities. Cris Rowan claims, “Diagnoses of ADHD, autism, coordination disorder, developmental delays, unintelligible speech, learning difficulties, sensory processing disorder, anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders are associated with technology overuse, and are increasing at an alarming rate” (Rowan). Technology throws a lot of information out at once and a child’s brain is easily “overloaded” with too much. The more technology grows, the more these disorders grow with it. Technology has caused many horrible things to happen due to its harmful effects on people. It has not strengthened our lives, but has done rather the opposite. It weakens our relationships, crushes our values, and even causes disabilities. Technology is detrimental to society, and its negative effects are getting stronger each day.

Most people say that as time advances so does technology. These advances in technology come at a cost. While technology has been developing, types of technology have been slowly eroding many aspects of our society and how people conduct themselves in social situations. Technology has also led to a decline in education and how people, in particular, students, gain knowledge. On a broad scale technology has both assisted law enforcement and, at the same time, led to the creation of new types of crimes and how old crimes are committed. Finally, technology has had a negative impact on the physical build of people, particularly in the United States. Though technology has assisted society in many good ways, most advances come at a cost which is slowly rising. These costs have a negative impact on many aspects of everyday life.…

Technology was invented to help and save people, but right now people are using technology in the worst way possible. Cyber bullying is more common on teenagers. Since social media was barely invented in the 2000s cyber bullying mostly happens in the late stages of middle school and early highschool years of our generation. A common way to find out whether or not your children are being bullied is to ask them every day. The children are frightened of becoming a victim of bullying and the consequences that continue. People stay quiet because the bully threatens them to hurt a friend or someone they love and care about. Talking by experience, it’s better to find out early than later. The worst consequence a parent or guardian can face is losing their child’s life. Cyber bullying can take different forms. Sending mean messages or threats, spreading rumors online or through texts, posting hurtful or threatening images, stealing a person’s personal information, and pretending to be someone else online are some examples of cyberbullying. In one case, a girl in Canada named Amanda Todd fell victim to cyberbullying. Amanda used video chat to make new friends, but there was a man who used her and blackmailed her many times, for as much as she could she couldn’t get rid of him, until one sad day she hanged herself in her room. School districts in the United States so far have not seen what a massive problem cyber bullying has come to be. Our nation has suffered a real enormous loss in young children’s and teenagers’ life. Mostly because even though the young children go to their teachers for help they still continue to be bullied and at the end they lose there…

Since the industrial revolution, society has become more and more dependent on technology. So much so that we sometimes lack the willingness to think before we act. We become impatient if it takes more than a few seconds to download a copy of the morning news paper. We expect immediate responses to our email, and we expect someone to answer their cell phone whenever and wherever we call. “Industrialization resulted in rapid and sustained economic growth and a massive increase in consumer goods. But at the same time, for many people it meant a thoroughly unpleasant work environment.”1…

There is no doubt that technological change brings about social change. The Industrial revolution saw many people displaced from their land, to find work in crowded city factories. Serfdom was abolished and the population shifted from villages to the cities. Strong family ties, self sufficiency and the right to occupy land were replaced with uncertain tenancy of land, dependency on trade and a weakening of the family unit.…

A major benefit from the space program that I am benefitting from are the programs me and my family watch every day on our large screen high definition television set at home on our home entertainment system. This has been made possible by two things that the space program helped develop- satellites and electronics. Satellites are a major component of the space program. So, the space program funded research that led to major advances in the satellite technology. In addition, to allow increased capabilities over small space and to reduce launch cost, the space program was pushed to develop integrated electronic circuits. This has led to the miniaturization of electronic components. These developments have led to the launching of numerous satellites that are currently orbiting the earth. The launch of Sputnik by the Russians in 1957 launched the space race. At the urging of US Congress both NASA and the Dept of Defense spearheaded the advances in both launch technology and satellite capabilities. During the 1950s the focus was primarily in developing satellites for defense purposes targeting monitoring and communication capabilities. The Government funded a number of projects with companies like RCA and Bell Labs to advance this field. In the 1960s, private players like AT&T realizing the huge commercial potential of satellites, became interested in the commercial applications of satellites. On April 6, 1965 the global commercial satellite communications age began with COMSAT's first geostationary satellite, early bird, which was launched from Cape Canaveral. Another major improvement was achieved when lower earth orbit (LEO) satellites were introduced later. These LEO satellites are cheaper to launch and operate as they require lower launch orbits and signal strength by virtue of their closer proximity to earth. Giant satellite networks like Iridium (77 satellites at a cost of $3B) and Globalstar are now key players in this market. The second key technological…

Research literature throughout the past decade has shown that technology can enhance literacy development, impact language acquisition, provide greater access to information, support learning, motivate students, and enhance their self-esteem (ACT, 2004; CEO Forum, 2001; Boster et al., 2004; Mann et al., 1999; Tracey & Young, 2006; WestEd, 2002). Indeed, researchers have affirmed that computer technology provides abundant opportunities for students to build or modify their personal knowledge through the rich experiences that technology affords.…
