You, Me, and Pornography: An Exploration in the Effects of Pornography on Interpersonal Relationships
With the invention of the internet and its subsequent surge in usage comes the dawn of the most widely used and accessible reservoir of sexually explicit material or SEM that there has ever been. It is accepted that from the beginning of human existence erotic pictures or words have been a part of human culture. Some of the most commonly cited examples of this are vase imagery from ancient Greece and the painted pornographic scenes at the ancient resort Pompeii. The very concepts of “obscenity” and “pornography” have ancient Latin and Greek etymological roots. It is not surprising that a technology which allows mass transmission and availability pornography would result in a deluge of usage. In 2006 alone porn revenues in the U.S. exceeded thirteen billion while world revenues surpassed ninety-three billion. ( Poulsen, Busby, & Galovan 74) This statistic is especially important since pornography is often free online, meaning its consumption greatly outnumbers this statistic, and rates have only increased with the continuous rise in the use of the internet. With the explosion of the use of pornography has come the implosion of many monogamous relationships, or so it seems. This paper will explore the effects that pornography has had on interpersonal relationships. The bulk of research I have found investigates the relationships between pornography and aggression, the differences it has on each gender, and relational satisfaction. Investigation into the effect of pornography on these components of interpersonal relationships will help to shed light on whether its consumption is helpful or harmful.
