Effective communication is central to developing positive relationships because it can lead to a positive relationship for learning, dependability, integrity, values diversity, builds trust, enables negotiation, and reinforces self-esteem.
Providing effective communication can be achieved by using appropriate body language for the situation e.g. encouraging a child to respond by having a relaxed posture, open arms, smiling. Letting a child know that what they have done is not appropriate, standing/sitting up straight, pursed lips. Direct eye contact, raised eyebrows, arms closed.
Valuing diversity by encouraging the positive aspects of what they can do well, accepting and acknowledging their differences, adapting ones self, to accommodate their needs. For an adult appropriate body language is required, with a peer a relaxed stance, use of language can be applied, but in a more formal setting with senior management, more formal greetings, language and posture should be used. Effective communication with a parent would waiver between the relaxed and formal language, body language, as you need to appear approachable yet in control.
Active listening is essential for effective communication, this requires observing their body language, the tone of voice, confirmation that you are listening which can be expressed by the nod of he head or an acknowledging grunt. Repeating what is said to ensure you have understood. This is good practice with children and adults alike.
Recognising individual needs and working with them. This can be shown by appreciating that they may require more personal space, they need to rock in their chair, they can only concentrate for a small period at a time. They may need additional processing time. Also when recognising individual needs, knowing if English is a second language to a parent or child, to make adjustments insuring that colloquialisms aren’t used and language used is clear and concise
