Effect of Temperature on the Rate of Reaction in Maggots
I predict that as I increase the temperature, the distance moved by the meniscus will also increase.

I believe this will happen as aerobic respiration is taking place. This is respiration involving the consumption of oxygen gas, producing carbon dioxide and water, as shown below.

C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O + 36ATP

This process allows energy to be produced in the form of ATP, Adenosine Triose Phosphate. This occurs by converting glucose into pyruvate via glycolysis. Pyruvate is then transported into the mitochondrial matrix via active transport. Numerous reactions, catalyzed by a multi enzyme complex then occur, where the pyruvate is decarboxylated as shown in the reaction below.

Pyruvate + NAD* + CoA ? acetyl CoA + reduced NAD + Carbon Dioxide

This experiment shall be carried out via the manometric technique, where there are two different environments with differing pressures. Oxygen is taken up by maggots for respiration, in one boiling tube, producing carbon dioxide, which is then absorbed by soda lime. As there are no living organisms in the other boiling tube, the atmosphere does not change, but there is till soda lime present to remove any carbon dioxide. So pressure in the maggots’ chamber decreases, causing air to be drawn into the chamber, and therefore displacing the fluid.
This double chambered respirometer, allows you to measure the pressure changes, due to the presence of a control tube.
The rate of oxygen intake is measured by recording the distance the dye moves up the scale. We then calculate the mean and multiply by ?r².
