ASSIGNMENT 2

EDRHODG

1. The most critical problem in our local schools is alcohol and drug abuse and high level of pregnancy rate and children who become orphans at early age due to HIV/AIDS epidemic, these children end up becoming the head of the house hold and that makes it difficult for them to focus on their school work. Parent involvement and the community involvement can be first step in trying to solve these problem. Community forum need to be formed in order to come up with the solution as to what need to be done to overcome this problem.

The most critical problem we have nationally that I have identified is lack of resources, and the shortage of qualified teachers, some schools do not have even science lab or computer lab. In this case government need to come out with the best strategy on how to resolve the problem of staff shortage and lack of resources, what can be done is to introduce mobile computer and science lab for a time being while he still looking for more funding to help built more science and computer labs.

2. I have identified this problem because they are the cause of poor standard of education because a child that is on drugs do thing that will cause them to forget that they were suppose to go to school they loose focus and pregnancy will lead to child not contracting in class because she will lose most her time because she has to attend prenatal classes

The curriculum: some teachers are placed to teacher subjects that are not their specialties, you cannot take an accounting teacher in a science class to teacher something she does not know or not familiar with.

Resources: some school subjects are more practical than others, for instances; schools in some townships do not have science labs, so that the students could practice chemistry. Some schools do not have even one computer or even text books.

Management capacity: the principle as head of the school is manager, meaning he or she has to manage the school operation, teachers failing to come to work on time, drunk or not producing work or positive results should be looked into.

Teacher qualification: this goes in two ways first being teachers (as mentioned above) sometimes have to teach subjects their not qualified for and secondly, recently shown on SABC News, some working teachers were found teaching with NO qualifications at all.

Teacher training: they should be trained to identify problems such as children with learning disabilities, abuse (physical or mental to name a few), and poverty stricken (children who work for miles to school without breakfast or a packed lunch) cannot concentrate in class.

Teacher status: a line should be drawn between teachers and students relationship, teachers cannot be social with students. A teacher should be professional regarding his status as educator and not a student’s friend. Teacher morals: teachers should not be social with students and having relationships with their learners, or drinking with learners. The teacher’s social life should not mix with his or her personal life. Some teachers sit in taverns and drink with their students, not necessarily in the same circle but a teacher should discipline a child for underage drinking and he or she should not be seen in such places.

Discipline in schools: it starts with the principle disciplining his or her staff to set well mannered explains for the students, then teachers could discipline students by setting guidelines and rules in and out of the classroom to maintain order.

Parental involvement: it is easy to say parents should be involve, but some work odd hours, but there should be Parent Teacher meetings to talk about the students progress, not to call a parent just because a child is misbehaving.

Language: I think it is important to teach in an international language such as English from the Foundation Phase, as it will help students to learn English at an early age, which will benefit them in the long run. Mother tongue can be taught in the mother tongue class.

Poverty: there are children that go to school, walking for miles even crossing dangerous rivers, in hot or cold weathers, with no shoes or jerseys, with no packed lunch, in classroom with broken windows (in winter). We expect that child to sit and concentrate in class

It is sad thing to see our learning environment; the place where we come to play sports, meet people, have a good time, learn many interesting things as a place where drugs are also associated. Furthermore, it is depressing to observe an intelligent kid become a person who just doesn’t care about school due to the substance that made them not. The fact that they started ads more to the big idea that it needs to end.…

The role of the senior management team is to take the decisions of the school governors and implement them. They have a responsibility to ensure things are done properly such as health and safety, finance and equality legislation to ensure there is no discrimination in the school. The role of the head teacher is to implement the policies which have been put in place by the school governors; they ensure that the day to day running of the school is correct especially with aspects such as behaviour, attendance and staff. If I member of staff leaves then it is up to the school governors to decide whether or not to replace them but members of the senior management team could be present during interviews for the replacement member of staff and could choose the appropriate candidate. However it is usually up to the governors to have the final say as to which candidate will be successful especially when the role is for a member of the senior management team especially head teacher. However they could have several members of the school to convey their opinion this could include students, teaching staff and other members of the senior management team.…

Adolescents who experiment with drugs normally do not have the facts of each drug and will normally start out with less harsh ones which eventually lead to the hardcore drugs as well as possibly alcohol. Adolescents who do not completely understand the consequences of these drugs are not fully aware of how these drugs can harm their bodies or how addictive they can turn out to be as well as some of the shameful things they may do in order to support their habit; they sure are not going to understand why these drugs are unsafe. Without understanding the dangers more adolescents to cave under peer-pressure. I believe adolescent drug abuse itself is a problem. Of course not everyone agrees on the solutions proposed. Certain individuals think more sports should be provided to offer structure to our adolescents away from home whereas others think parents need to become further educated to be prepared to teach their own children.…

There are five general types of factors which can affect the health and physical development of children, one of these factors is lifestyle. Lifestyle factors are the way in which we choose to live and the things that we can change, this includes drugs. Drugs affect lots of people's lives. Even legal drugs can be dangerous when people become addicted to them. In day to day life we are all faced with situations such as stress and negative feelings, some parents tend to use drugs as a coping mechanism. This can affect the children’s health and physical development because if the parent has negative feelings the child is more likely to have them too causing them to feel bad about themselves as well. The child could lead down the same road as the parent and take on drugs or lead to depression which affects the child’s emotional development. Also, the child may feel neglected from the parent because the parents don’t look after them enough; the parent could stop looking after the child and choose not to accompany them, this would put the child at risk. The parent could cause harm to the child by: driving whilst under the influence of drugs; not putting the drugs in a secure place; risking them to witness drug use and some symptoms could cause the levels of childcare to change in the parent causing them to not care for the child and ensure the child is safe. The children will begin to feel like they don't have a safe and secure home they could go to. They could become physically and mentally scared by what they have seen and cause them to hate their surroundings, their life and eventually themselves. This can affect a child’s emotional security. Drugs can affect children's health and physical development because it can affect the ability of parents to do basic needs for their child. For example: give them food. If a child doesn't have a good diet, this means they are not getting nutrition that they need for their bodies to develop properly. If the child only has a diet…

PARA. 1: There are approximately one in four children in the United States that is exposed to alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence in the family. While there are other children living in families in which there is illicit drug abuse. Evidence shows that children who have experiences with parents who have drug or alcohol problems tend to have behavioral problems or abuse either substance themselves. (Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, 2003) Children with an addicted parent are also at a higher-than-average risk for problems in school. Some effects that are caused by having parents like these are emotional disturbances such as depression, and anxiety. When children grow up in a home that is unstable, or where they witness their parents under the influence of alcohol or drugs it can scar a child and cause emotional damage as well (Sheahan, 2008). Children with an addicted parent or parents also have a high risk of dropping out of school early due to indirect drug exposure that causes effects on the ability to learn effectively. In some cases it causes learning disabilities. Additionally, children may develop mental health problems that cause them to lose interest in their education (Sheahan, 2008). In one study, 41% of addicted parents reported that at least one of their children repeated a grade in school, 19% were involved…

We live in a free society where drugs can be obtained by both legally and illegally with very little resistance. Therefore, it's mandatory that young people be made aware of the impacts of drugs. I believe this should start no later than at the middle school level. Education should be in the form of literature discussed in classrooms, video showing the impact of drug addiction, and live testimony from individuals who have been through the trials of addiction.…
