If someone asked you this question, “Who Moved My Cheese?” what would you think they were talking about?   I can honestly say I was not thinking it had anything to do with how employees choose to deal with change.   This book is an enlightening story written by Spencer Johnson, M.D., on how employees accept and reject change in different situations.   This book is unique because the author’s insight on how people react to change can help a person identify their own type of behavior as well as allow a manager identify the type of employees they are dealing with on a daily basis.   You will come to realize how change impacts everyone not only in the workplace but in their personal lives as well.   This story discusses four characters and their ability to accept change.   The characters are two mice named Sniff and Scurry and two little people named Hem and Haw.   Please note that throughout this report “Cheese” is used as a metaphor for what we want to have in our lives.   It may represent a job, a relationship, money, freedom, health or spiritual peace.   The “Maze” represents where you find what it is you are looking for.   It may be a place of employment, a church you attend, relationships you value or the community you live in.   We all share something in common - a need to find our way in the “Maze” and succeed in changing times.   We all pursue “Cheese” because of what it can do for us, such as bringing us happiness, wealth or recognition.   We also fear losing our “Cheese” because we become attached to it and the loss of it can be traumatic.
Most employees resist change because they fear change.   They fear the unknown.   Change in the workplace causes a mixture of emotions.   Most employees fear what they do not understand.   They become frustrated and less productive when they do not understand the vision or the purpose for the change.   As an employer, change should be presented as an opportunity to gain something great and lose nothing.   The employees should be given the...
