Ecommerce Project Proposal
Project Title:
Developing an e-commerce solution in the form of a travel portal for the Sri Lanka Railway Authority to provide means of promoting and providing travel facilities for the North and east of Sri Lanka
3.0 Problem Context:
With the end of the 30 year civil war Sri Lanka is currently in the process of regaining its economic stability. Tourism as one of its major industries would play a vital part in Sri Lanka’s revival process, contributing 1.9% of the GNP and 5.2% to foreign earnings [ (Shantha, 2008) ]. As part of the Mahinda Chinthana His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse has stated that the government of Sri Lanka targets to increase tourism to 2.0mn by 2016 (Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, 2010).
Efforts are currently being made to develop these areas to support tourism and as part of the long term plan conducted by the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLRDC) (Asian Tribune, 2010); investors have been encouraged to support this initiative. As mentioned by Thomson Reuters Foundation (2010) locations such as Jaffna, Elephant Pass and Mullaitivu have been identified as potential tourist hubs.
Infrastructure is a vital component for the success of efforts taken to promote the northern part of Sri Lanka. Even though many solutions have been proposed and under execution, traveling and lodging are still two of the major obstacles the traveler will face. One of the major initiatives taken by the government to provide the appropriate infrastructure as well as encourage travelers to travel to the North and East is the re building of train tracks to these areas. As stated by Mr. Srirangarajah the government is continuing railway services to the North and rebuilding railway tracks which were destroyed during the war.
