The federal budget is the process through which annual federal spending and revenue decisions are prepared (Patterson, 2013, p.388). The Constitution allocates that congress has the power to tax and spend; however, the president who is the chief executive plays a significant role in determining the budget (Patterson, 2013, p. 338). The federal budget process begins in the executive branch when the president is in consultation with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) who establishes general budget guidelines (Patterson, 2013, p. 338). Furthermore, the OMB is part of the executive office of the president that also receives its orders from the president of the U.S. (Patterson, 2013, p.338). In addition, the OMB uses the president’s…

    A Balanced Budget

Society seems content to complain about the government’s spending; all of the budget cuts, raised taxes, and our slow descent into a never-ending debt. Americans, like myself, are so outspoken about the government’s wrongdoings and everyone seems to think that a solution is simple. In all actuality, the solution is anything but simple. I initially believed that a solution to the United States budget was easy and the government just was not trying hard enough. It was not until I was put in the position to actually solve America’s budget issue on the interactive game “Budget Hero,” that I realized how layered and complex the United States budget really is. The game is set ten years in the future and only years away from what they call “the budget bus date.” It was my goal to get the national debt from 70% to below 60% of GDP and prolong the budget bust as long as possible. After one failed attempt and then another long run, playing around with different cards, I was finally able to accomplish this. It was through my personal values and beliefs that I was able to reduce the debt from 70% to 59.7% and delay the budget bust date by two years.…

    Problem Set 2

Answer: A budget deficit occurs when the government spending exceeds government revenue in a given time period, usually one year. Budget deficits are financed by a country's bonds. In the U.S., it's financed by Treasury bills, notes and bonds. This is the government's way of printing money. Actually, it is creating more credit denominated in that country's currency. However, it has the same effect -- it lowers the value of that country's currency. As bonds flood the market, the supply outweighs the demand. The Keynesians believe that when aggregated demand exceeds productive capacity of the economy, the federal government can prevent inflationary overheating by reducing demand with a budget surplus generated by a combination of less spending and higher taxes.…
