1. INTRODUCTION
Companies have the objective of producing goods or services which can easily be sold by satisfying their customers’ desires. They set this objective to make their products able to fit for use. Different companies that produce similar products may compete for the same set of consumers. To win the competition, high quality products should be brought into the market. Customers need to be attracted by the products in any aspect. They need to get the intended and implied service from the products. Products need to be affordable to be purchased. Such requirements which are expected from competing products bring the concept of quality in to picture.
If we say that quality plays great role for the success of products, how do we define it? Different authors have defined it differently with, of course, similar concepts.
Some of its definitions are:-
• Quality is the ability of products to satisfy stated and implied desires of consumers.
• Quality is fitness for use, or conformance for requirement
• Quality is the degree of excellence which a thing possesses or the features that make some thing what it is.
• Quality is customer satisfaction.
Quality of manufactured products can be understood better in terms of its eight dimensions which were defined by D. A. Garvin.
They are:-
-Performance: - It refers to the Totality of the products operating characteristics. For example, in a computer, it refers to the random access memory (RAM) capacity, hard disc memory capacity, monitor screen size and others.
-Features: - This refers to special characteristics and options that are often intended by the designer to distinguish the product from its competitors. For example, computers may be designed with compact size (to minimize space utilization) and high hard disc memory capacity.
