Philosophy is split into two extensive categories, Eastern Philosophy and Western Philosophy. Some of the great Eastern philosophers were: Siddhartha Gautama(Buddha), Confucius, Mencius, Hui Neng, and Dogen Kigen. Western philosophy is known for Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Kierkegaard, and, Heidegger. Eastern philosophy is important now more than ever. The East is a major global power. Becoming familiar with the inhabitants of Asia, the world’s largest continent will help us in the future, as well as the present. The ancient Eastern philosophers can not only add a bit of important history but a different perspective into our own values, perhaps making us reevaluate what is important. Murasaki Shikibu is an important Japanese, Shinto, Buddhist and feminist philosopher (Moore & Bruder, 2008). Muraski Shikibu was not her real name but she was given the nickname “Muraski” because the real author strongly resembled a character by that name in the book she wrote. Muraski came from well- read family, who enjoyed reading and writing. Unfortunately at this time women were forbidden to study the Chinese characters(the original written form of the Japanese language. Muraski learned young how to read Chinese characters by listening while her brother was taught. As a teen-ager she was in the entourage of Empress Joto-Mon in Shoshi. Muraski secretly taught the Empress the Chinese characters too. She became a Lady in Waiting for this Empress (Tyler, 2011). Muraski was an important part of women’s history in Japan. Muraski was a feminist who believed that women should be treated equally to men. She emphasized the importance of having spiritual enlightening in one’s life.
