When I think of a famous Men of Omega, the one name that comes to mind is Earl Gilbert Graves. Earl Gilbert Graves is a world renowned author, publisher, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is also a role model for future black businessmen. Earl Gilbert Graves was born January 9th 1935 in Brooklyn, New York. Coming from a working-class black family, as a boy Graves swept sidewalks and brought in garbage cans every time garbage was collected. He graduated, from Morgan State University with a degree in economics in 1958 and served two years in the U.S. Army, leaving with the rank of Captain in the elite Green Beret unit. Also, while at Morgan State University, he became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Earl Graves has had influential roles in America. For example, he was the administrative assistant to Senator Robert F. Kennedy and was in the Kennedy entourage the night the senator, campaigning to win the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles in June 1968. Also, when Martin Luther King Jr. was killed in Memphis, Graves was assigned by Senator Kennedy, to oversee the arrangements for Rev. King's body to be brought home. In 1968, Graves started Earl G. Graves, Ltd, which is a holding company that houses plenty of other businesses owned by him. In 1970, Graves’s publishing company began publishing Black Enterprise Magazine, which goal is to provide inspiration to African American in the business community. Today the magazine has 500,000 paid subscribers and over 3 million readers and has grossed $53 million in sales. In 2002, Graves was named as one of the 50 most powerful and influential African Americans in corporate America by Fortune Magazine. Aside from his accomplishments with Black Enterprise Magazine, Graves have received recognition for his many accomplishments in other areas.
