Should Drunk Drivers be Imprisoned on Their First Offense?

There are many accidents that occur because of drunk drivers. Many people lose their lives because people aren’t responsible when they drink. They think that they are “just fine” and can drive, but in reality once they’ve had a drink they shouldn’t be behind a wheel. It is a fact that on average one person is killed by a drunk driver every forty minutes. While being intoxicated signals on the road can be missed or read wrong. Drunk drivers should be imprisoned on their first offense because it will be a lesson learned, our accident rates will go down, and it will tell everyone that this offence will not be taken lightly. First, drunk drivers need to learn their lesson. If they just receive a ticket and a DUI what will that teach them? They can’t drive but that doesn’t mean that they won’t. The ticket will be the easiest part because they can just pay it off, but if they are imprisoned that is a different story. If they are imprisoned they will go through a tough time because they will live their consequence. They will learn that driving drunk is no joking matter and that there will be serious consequences that will follow them wherever they go. Most people fear prison a lot more than what they fear a ticket. Being in prison their life is taken from them. If they are imprisoned they will see what losing their privilege to freedom will be like. While receiving ticket they pay it off and move on with their lives.
