The excessive and unregulated use of drugs which is popularly called drug abuse or drug addiction has emerged as a major social problem recently and has crossed the border of caste, class, creed, sex and nation. Drug Abuse is one of the banes of modern society. It has hit all regions and all sections of our society. It is found in rural and urban areas, among poor and the rich, among the men and women. But it is most overwhelmingly practiced by young boys and girls in hostels in almost all educational and technical institution. Drug abuse implies physical dependence upon a drug including the development of tolerance and withdrawal. An addict who develops tolerance requires more and more of the drug to transport him to the world of fantasies. If the addict is not allowed to take the drug he suffers from painful and uncontrollable convulsions, vomiting, depression and various other maladies. It is like curse for developing country like India as it has already existing problems like poverty, unemployment and overpopulation. Drug abuse affects individuals, their families and the society as a whole. Drug abuse often leads to crime as a result of reduced impulse control, paranoia and negligence. Effects the law and order, economic production and human welfare.Drug abuse causes multiple problems for countries and communities.
Drug-addiction is an acute problem which has defied all efforts at its solution so far. The drug - addict cannot do without the drug even for a short while, and the habit goes on increasing and soon the addict finds himself a helpless victim of this degrading habit. He must get his dose of it at the fixed time and if he does not get it, he weeps and cries and becomes incapable of the least movement. The result is that he borrows money, or he steals it from his own home or from any other place which may be within his reach. He or she exploited in various ways by their so called friends or the sellers of these vicious drugs. The drug-addicts steal, and with their parents and other members of the family, so that their life in the home becomes a hell. The habit becomes so confirmed that the victim becomes a slave to the drug. If he or she doesn’t take it regularly, he or she feels something missing and even greatly depressed with acute pain and numbness in legs and arms. Drugs are of many kinds like opium, heroin, ganja, charas etc. There are also some injections which induce intense drowsiness.Often the evil results in suicide and the ruin of the whole family. The only beneficiaries are the vendors of these drugs. They thrive while their victims perish. He or she may consume large quantities of cough syrups and the like which induce drowsiness. Withdrawal symptoms are acute and serious. A lot of money is involved in drugs. For instance, one kg. Of heroin is valued at 1-crore rupees in the international market. That is why the drug mafia is so active.
There are many different factors in our society that have contributed to the support of drug abuse and drug use. One such reason is the need to satisfy our want of mental stimulation audio/ visually. Alcoholism is another problem that ranks highly in our nation of substance abuse. Traditional treatment for alcohol abuse usually involves a twelve -step program at a licensed treatment center. The use of psychedelic drugs has been used as a form of treatment for alcoholism. Our society is filled with elements, which are motivating factors for alcohol abuse.
