The Case of … The Drowning Girl

Abe took his daughter Jill and her friends Kristi and Chin to the lake for the day. While horsing around on the dock, Kristi deliberately shoved Chin into Jill, causing Jill to fall into the water. Jill landed awkwardly and sank to the bottom of the lake. Chin then pushed Kristi back, ignoring Jill’s plight (she was drowning). Hannah, a bystander and also an expert swimmer, glared at Kristi but took no other action. Abe confronted the group, demanding that they do something because he could not swim. Tragically, Jill drowned because nobody helped her. Analyze the role of each witness. Based upon the circumstances and the action/non-actions of the witnesses, are any of the witnesses criminally responsible?

Part 1 Answer the following question. Use complete sentences. Make sure your explanations are thorough.

Should a person’s intentions matter in deciding if he or she committed a crime? For example, should it matter if an act was done on purpose? If it was done when a person was being reckless? If it was done when a person was enraged?
