Abstract
Rachel Aldrich drank part of a 25 cent cup of water that killed her. She wasn’t alone – 1,000 other people fell ill and a few others died at the Washington County Fair that day. This is not an isolated incident: there are 19.5 million Americans that fall ill every year from waterborne illness. The problem is systemic. There is a lack of reporting infrastructure, testing is slow, and a culture of laxity both hinders progress and is a disaster in the making. In order to combat this problem, an in line real time bacterial detection device has been developed that will report automatically, quantify contaminants, and bring attention to potential problems. This device will address the source quality of water, the purification effectiveness, and protecting infrastructure and diagnosing problems.
