Dreamers
Dreamers: people who are guided more by ideals than practical considerations. Robin S. Sharma says, “Dreamers are mocked as impractical. The truth is they are the most practical, as their innovation lead to progress and a better way of life for all of us.” All “dreamers” have a belief in what they want to accomplish, because they have the vision of the result to keep them motivated.
We were all once kids with those crazy ideas of becoming a superhero, or a princess in a huge castle. Our parents let us believe it, but they knew it would eventually not happen. The minds of children run free with imagination, and there is no stopping it. For example, before every shower I took, I would run around naked with a cape and scream “NAKED BOY!!!” Don’t ask me why, but the point is that my mind was all over the place. It paid off in the future because now I am really creative, and my mind is always open. Even though I didn’t achieve my dream of becoming the first naked superhero, I have the vision and strong belief to get me to where I want to be today. Unfortunately, life isn’t like Peter Pan where we can stay in our kid days for eternity.
Eventually we will need to face the real world and go to school, and start figuring out what we want to do for a living. College is the perfect breeding ground for this. For some people, I know they are just looking for partying and sex, but then you have the smart, bright mind like Beneatha. In A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, Beneatha dreams of going to college and becoming a doctor. Her brother, Walter, heckles her about how she should just give up her dream and become a housewife; but Beneatha doesn’t let this affect her because she is smart, confident, and a believer. She keeps her vision of where she needs to get and doesn’t let anybody alter her decision to make her dream a reality. College is done and it’s time to start your

Going to college is considered to be one of the most important parts of a person’s adult life. Lee focuses on this unnecessary pedestal that the college experience is put on. Kids treat it as an excuse to party and do not place the same level of importance on it as their parents do. Lee had this realization with her own son when she thought about how she was “paying $1,000 a week for this pleasure cruise” (52). This lead her to pull her son out of school until he was ready to go back and be serious or find a job to occupy his time more efficiently. Her son went on to have many different jobs. They were not the most glamorous, but taught him independence and how to be responsible with his own money. Lee argues that this life path got her son to a fulfilling place where he was enjoying what he was doing and had found a good job where a promotion was in his near future (2). This end result is typically why students go through college in the first place.…

It was a moment in theatrical history both epic and serene” (Washington Post 1). In today’s society, students are constantly being pushed to work towards a higher education. President Obama recently encouraged students to pursue at least one year of college after graduating high school. Our whole school system relies on previous education to get to the next. Each level of education has a purpose and that is to prepare them for the next level. After grade school comes middle school, after middle school comes high school, and after high school comes college, but what comes after college? With the previous pattern, the next level after college would be a career, but is this necessarily true? Is this the only path students have? Many students end up attending a four-year college because they feel like they are suppose and this often results in students not having a proper career goal. When this happens, they often get confused and lost in all the academic chaos. Even when students do have a career goal, they are sometimes encouraged to go into colleges that do not fully provide the education they need for their specific career. Although attending a four-year college and obtaining a degree is desired by many, students should be encouraged to attend schools based on their career choices, not by society’s standards.…

In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s short story “Volar,” a girl who is a huge fan of comic books dreams of being a Superhero but realizes her reality. Whether a child or an adult, most of us have our dreams; however, not all wishes become true. The narrator, the girl, begins her story describing how much she loves comic books such as Legion of SuperHeroes and Supergirl so much that a pile of her books is high as she is. She smoothly continues with her repeated dream in which Cofer vividly conveys the image that provides the reader with her strong sense of purpose.…

The play "A Raisin In The Sun", by Lorraine Hansberry is a perfect embodiment of the Langston Hughes' poem "A Raisin In the Sun" because each of the characters experiences the reality of their dreams being too big to achieve in a country dominated by the white Americans. One of the earliest and most obvious examples of this is Walter Younger, who feels misunderstood throughout most of the play. For Walter, everything has always been about money and he believes that wealth is the solution to everything. His dream was to invest the ten thousand dollars, that was left for his mother from his late father, into an alcohol business with a man named Willy. Throughout the play, no one listens to his dream of investing or makes an effort to understand where he's coming from. When he finds out that his mother spent the money on her dream of buying a house, he explodes on everyone and spends the next three days drinking. Eventually his mother pity's him and decides to let him be the man of the house now by leaving him in charge of all of the money that she had left, including Beneatha's college funds. Walter spends all of the money on the investment - only to have it be stolen by Willy. As a result, Walter grows as a person because, though he is moneyless on account of his mistake, he stands up to the white man who tried to pay them not to move into their new home - located in an all-white neighborhood. Thus, based off of Langston Hughes' poem, when one asks the question "what happens to a dream deferred?", the answer that I drew from this play is that a dream deferred will make the targeted individual stronger - just like Walter. This same answer can be found in Beneatha's case because she lost all of her college funds due to Walter's poor investment; as a result, she…

Former successful Olympian, Gail Devers, once said “Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication” (Gail Devers, Brainy Quotes). Dever’s words resonate as she inspires those who usually let obstacles keep them from chasing their dreams. As children with an overactive imagination, nothing seems out of reach. Somehow, as we grow older, we begin to notice our strengths and weaknesses and we end up letting go of our old dreams and moving on. Growing up, I fanaticized over what I would do as an adult. Those fantasies ranged from a world-famous pop star to President of the United States. Through all those times of make-believe speeches and singing into a hairbrush, one of my…

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars and change -the world.” - Harriet Tubman. Some people are realists and some people like Harriet Tubman are dreamers. According to The Outsiders by S. E Hinton, Mr. Ferris and His Wheel by Kathryn Gibbs Davis, and Dream Big but be Realistic for a Successful Life by Thomas G. Plante many people consider themselves a dreamer or a realist. A realist is someone who is very realistic and only thinks of simple ideas. A dreamer is someone who dreams up new ideas. Being a dreamer is more important than being a realist because you can turn your dreams into ideas, escape from reality, and get motivated.…

In terms of dreamers and realists, I imagine the dreamer to always be wondering. Feet dangling just a few inches shy of gravity; the dreamer dares to look the sun in the eyes, and worships the moon for the peace it provides. The realist would be rooted to the ground like a bud in the soil – but by choice – it is content, it is striving not for more, but perfecting what they already have.…
