New Delhi: The year 2012 was full of numerous major events in the fields of politics, business, cinema and sports which shaped the outgoing year and grabbed a lot of public attention. At home, we saw many important happenings like UPA’s trouble shooter Pranab Mukherjee’s election as thePresident of the Indian Republic, surfacing of a string of scams dealing severe blow to the credibility of the UPA dispensation at the Centre, intense bickering within BJP with demand to remove incumbent party chief Nitin Gadkari and demise of several veteran personalities from all fields of public interests. Demise of Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray and former Prime Minister IK Gujral marked the end of an era in Indian politics whereas passing away of legendary film actors like- Rajesh Khanna, Dara Singh and renowned film maker Yash Chopra left the showbiz shocked. Let us take a glance at the events which took place in the outgoing leap year of 2012:
19 January: Suresh Kalmadi, who was behind bars and facing trial for irregularities in organising 2010 Commonwealth Games, was granted bail by Delhi High Court. February 2: The Supreme Court cancelled 122 2G spectrum licences allotted to the telecom companies during DMK leader A Raja’s stint as Union Minister for Telecom. The Apex Court also granted bail to A Raja, an accused in the 2G scam and lodged in a Delhi jail for his alleged involvement in allocating the licences arbitrarily causing huge losses to government’s exchequer. February 8: Three ministers of BJP government in Karnataka- Laxman V Savadi, CC Patil and J Krishna Palemar- were found watching porn clips in the state assembly. They subsequently tendered resignation February 11: The then Army chief General VK Singh, who had put his case on the row over his real death of birth on the pulpit of the Supreme Court, withdrew the petition after being asked to do so by the Apex Court. February 13: Tal Yehoshua Koren, wife of Israel's defence attachéAn and an official at the Israeli embassy in India, received serious injuries when a bomb fixed by an unidentified bike rider in her SUV exploded. Four others too sustained injuries in this incident. February 16: Two fishermen from Kerala were shot dead off Kerala coast in Arabian sea by Italian marine officers, Latore Massimilliano and Salvatore Girone, who mistaken the slain Indians for pirates triggering a shockwave across and anger across the country. The Italian mariners were later arrested and put behind bars who are still under trial. March 6: Assembly election results of five states were declared after which Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh replacing BSP government led by Mayawati in the state. BJP leader Manohar Parrikar became Chief Minister in Goa replacing Digambar Kamat of Congress. Congress government led by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was voted back to power whereas in Uttarakhand, Congress wrested power from BJP by replacing B C Khanduri of BJP and Vijay Bahuguna became Chief Minister. In Punjab, SDM-BJP combine was voted back to power and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was sworn in for the first time for the second consecutive term. March 18: Dinesh Trivedi (Trinamool Congress MP) stepped down from the post of Union Railway Minister. He was at odds with Trinamool leadership when he proposed hike in rail fare in the Rail Budget of 2012 without consulting party Chief Mamata Banerjee. Mukul Roy, a close aide of TMC chief became new Railway Minister. March 21: Iconic Bengali film actor Soumitra Chatterjee was named for 2011 Dadasaheb Phalke award. March 22: India backed a UN resolution criticising its next-door neighbour Sri Lanka for allegedly violating civil rights during the civil war in which terror outfit Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was rooted out.
