Down syndrome

Throughout the world there are many babies who are born with genetic disorders. One of the most common disorders known today is Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21. Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. The incidence of Down syndrome is estimated at one per 800 to one per 1000 births. Down syndrome is the most common single cause of human birth defects. In most cases, Down syndrome occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome 21. Due to an extra chromosome, there are problems with the way the body and brain develop. As far as treatments go, there is no specific treatment for this disorder. Children with Down syndrome have a widely recognized appearance. The symptoms of this disorder vary from person to person and can range from mild to severe. The head may be smaller than normal and abnormally shaped. For example, the head may be round with a flat area on the back and the inner corner of the eyes may be rounded instead of pointed. There are many common physical signs that show when a person has Down syndrome. Some of these signs include: decreased muscle tone at birth, flattened nose, small ears, upward slanting eyes, and several more. The physical development of people with Down syndrome is often slower than normal. Most of the children who are born with this disorder never reach their average adult height. They may also have delayed mental and social development. Some of the common problems include: impulsive behavior, poor judgment, short attention span, and slow learning. In some cases, when children with Down syndrome become aware of their limitations they may feel frustration and anger. There are many different medical conditions that are seen in people who have this disorder. These conditions include: eye problems, heart defects, hip problems, hearing problems, and many more.
