Dos and Don'Ts (Public Speaking)
There are certain dos that you need to always keep in mind when speaking in public. But there are also things that you are advised not to do.

1. Plan your talk - Don't forget that any lecture is a performance: you must work to get your message across.

2. Don’t forget your presentation.

3. Don’t apologize - No need to apologize when you give a speech or tell the audience that you are nervous. They might not even notice that you are.

4. Don’t talk about how awesome you are and how many qualifications you have. Your audience has already showed up to see you; let your content and form sell itself.

5. Don't end sentences with "right?" or "OK?"

6. Don’t Fumble - Pay attention to what you are doing with your hands. People rely on more than just words when they are listening to someone. They also look at the person's gestures. Fumbling with your hands is something that distracts their attention away from what you are saying.

7. Don’t go too far outside your comfort zone. It will show.

8. Don’t make your speech too long. – No one likes to listen to a long speech. Keep your speech sweet and short and never start by saying “I’ll keep this short…” 9. Don’t speak too fast - Linked with being nervous is the problem of speaking too fast. One of the most common public speaking mistakes is to speak at a pace that your listeners find hard to follow.

10. Don’t get too passionate. – If you are making a serious speech about something you believe in, there is a possibility you will get too passionate. Don’t let that happen! Getting really passionate will scare your audience away. Bear in mind, there will be people who don’t agree with you on any issues that you are talking.

11. Don’t forget to use visual aids - Giving presentations or lectures are not just about what you have to say, it is important to present visual supporting materials too.

12. Don’t lie - Be honest and truthful, even if you don’t know an

    Preparing myself to face my first speech to a large audience, I’m going to extend to come off as if I’m going to be confident and try to do my best as in not sending the audience an opposite message. The strategies that I’m going to use to control the butterflies in my stomach are the pacing method. With the pacing it is going to the nervousness away from me. Also while presenting my speech I’m going to listen to the audience to make sure they are enjoying it and not getting bored or the opposite approach of it. Another strategy I’m going to use to better help me with my speech is to have an good sense of humor while reading my speech that way the audience can come off as being comfortable with me. Lastly the strategy that I find greatly important is to kind of memorize the speech while presenting it that way I won’t have to keep looking down at my paper too much; I will generate good eye contact with the large audience to make them feel front-page and very cheerful at the same time. The steps that I believe I would need to take to become an better listener is give good eye contact because when looking at an person as they speak you generally hear everything they are saying. Another strength that would help me become a better listener is to talk less than I’m actually listening to the person speak and to also challenge assumptions. I believe that it is important to challenge the assumptions certainly because in order to get what you need to know from someone and to also make good decisions about what you have heard you have to have listen to the speaker. My prior weakness that I do while listening to a speech is having additional things distracting me while listening to a speech and that causes me to get sidetracked. I affirm that to make me become a better listening I should give the speaker a clear view and open ears to listen to their speech because I extremely would want the same thing in return.     I hate being nervous when speaking. I would make sure that I had an ample supply of water available to soothe my ever-drying mouth; I would make sure that I had a portable microphone so I could walk around to minimize nervous energy. I would know my material like the back of my hand, by doing so I will come across as professional. I would arrive early to the location to where I am giving the speech. I will arrive early and walk around the room including the speaking area. I could stand at the lectern speak into the microphone; maybe walk around where the audience will be getting a feel for the room. If possible, I would greet some of the audience as they arrive and chat with them. It is easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers. Choose one member of my audience and dedicate my whole presentation to him or her. Just assume that not everyone else is paying attention. When someone asks me a question, change your focus to that person and answer the question as if the two of you are in a coffee shop chatting away. Isn’t that the most relaxing way to handle a crowd? I think these are some good ideas to get over being nervous. I scored higher than I thought I would, I know paying attention in a meeting or at a conference is rather easy but sometimes, the most insignificant things can distract me. I have seen many excellent speakers on the TED talks. A good speaker makes a considerable difference when someone is passing on a good amount of good quality information. I know if a speaker is not prepared and has a hard time, getting his point across, I can really become distracted or even uninterested. I remember learning how to be a better listener when I was in Boot Camp. The drill instructors really reinforced their techniques to make sure each series of Marines learned exactly what it was to become better than the class before you.
