Every 9 seconds, an unsuspecting woman results in a severe beating at the hands of the man she loves. Whether she fails to have dinner prepared on time or fails to her spouse before going shopping with friends, does not justify a reason to cause harm to another individual. Domestic violence is the physical, verbal, and psychological abuse directed mainly by men towards women and sometimes children. The batterers of domestic violence are characterized as having certain strong behaviors that can lead to physical injury. Some of these behaviors are just a stepping-stone for a batterer to control and dominate over his intimate partner. Behaviors like jealously over family and friends, and control over what she does or where she goes may be small and unnoticeable at first but can develop into a dangerous situation over time. The batterer will also try to move the relationship at a faster pace, by convincing his partner that he is madly in love with her. A typical batterer will attempts to marry within 6 months to further his control over his partner.
After marriage, the cycle of domestic violence continues and becomes increasingly dangerous for the victim. Some women report that soon after the marriage, usually following the honeymoon, the batterer undergoes rapid mood changes from being happy at one moment and enraged at another moment. The batterer also uses threats of intimidation or violence to control his partner like punching walls inches from the face of his partner or breaking “loved possessions”. In past years, woman would be beaten and nothing would be done about the situation. Domestic violence was considered a family issue and would have been kept private. When domestic violence was witnesses it was often, overlooked and deemed to be handled in a private matter among family members.
