The Dog Delusion April Pedersen

Have people taken the care of their dogs too far? The author (April Pedersen) of this article seems to think so, she thinks that people have come to worship their dogs and treat them as gods instead of pets. Do we as a society worship our dogs? I have to agree some people do. Dogs have been around as long as people, at least that’s what the good book says. They have been loyal to man since the beginning of time, they have also been a good companion for mankind. Dogs are good, loyal, loveable, and kind by nature. They give their undivided attention and don’t form an opinion (good or bad) about you or what you have done, they are good listeners and they don’t judge you for your mistakes. Everywhere you go you see them, people and their dogs. How many times have you seen a car going down the road and the head of a dog is hanging out the window, or you go to a store and someone has one of those purses with a little dog in it. Some people even wear clothes on them. How did we get here, how did we get from loving dogs to worshiping dogs or treating dogs like people? Some people think of their dogs as children, they say they would even die for them! This is outrageous! How can you even consider dying for a dog? Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs, I even own one but there is no comparison between him and my children. Having a dog and having a child are two totally different things. Some people have dogs because they are childless, either by choice or are unable to have any children. In cases such as these, I can understand to a point how one would think highly of the dog and think of it as an important part of their lives, but to treat it as a child? People that don’t have children for whatever reason and own a dog, that’s fine but its not a child if you want a child then adopt or be a foster parent. Those that choose not to have children, why have a dog and treat it like one, isn’t that defeating the whole purpose? People that have dogs that dress them up and carry them around in purses, what is the point? I just don’t get it. When I was a little girl I would dress our dog up and push it around in a baby carriage but I’m not a little girl anymore and I don’t think the liked it much anyway. I see these kind of people every day, and the author has a point, it has become like worship. I’ve heard of people that actually have a place at the dinner table for their dog! WHAT? This is not only outrageous it is completely unsanitary (unless you don’t mind dog hair in your food). What has this world come to? Letting dogs eat at the table with humans. Its just not right or healthy to hold dogs in such regard. People say that dogs love unconditionally and don’t act out such as a child might do. How many times you have left the house and the dog chews your shoes or gets into the trash? How many times have you scolded your dog and it took a crap on the floor? Don’t you think these are forms of acting out? You love your dog, I get that, they are not gods they are pets.

Dogs are descended from a tree climbing carnivore that appeared some 40,000,000 years ago; 7,000,000 years ago the Canidae family began to differentiate into wolves, foxes, coyotes, fennecs and jackals. It has long been assumed that dogs were first domesticated in Europe and Asia around 10,000 years ago; they followed nomadic groups eating leftovers and gradually became used as watchdogs and protectors. Recent studies of fossil records, however (see Stalking the Ancient Dog), have generated the hypothesis that domestication occurred much earlier.…

Canines and Felines have always held a very special companionship with humans on this earth. My pit bulls have taught me that as long as my loved ones and I know who I am and what I am truly like, then I don’t have to worry about what anyone else thinks. Every time I lost one of my dogs, my heart was broken, and I felt like it would be impossible to love another dog, but I feel love again with every dog I meet at the shelter. Dogs teach us what it is to give and not expect anything in return, they teach us the meaning of unconditional love, and the only thing they truly want from us is that same love. Everyone knows that dogs don’t live as long as we do, which is one of the hardest parts of being a dog owner, but it’s because they’re here to teach us how to love. Dogs already know how, which is why they don’t stay for as long as we do, it takes us a little longer to learn selflessness and love.…

I was never a dog lover. My kids always wanted a dog. I dug my heels in but eventually, they wore me down with chorus’ of “please can we get a dog?” Begrudgingly, I began looking for a dog. It was to be a Christmas present for my kids, an older dog, a trained dog. I knew that I did not have the patience for training and I knew that when kids say they will help; I knew exactly what that meant.…

I believe that dogs can teach you so many essential moral values in life. For instance, dogs teach you to express your inner feelings, and it’s always a good thing to let people know how you feel. Like a dog, when loved ones come home, you should always voluntarily run to greet them. Dogs show their emotions freely, when looking at a dog; their emotions are always detectable and evident. They don't hide themselves, they're not afraid to show how they really feel. Like a dog, dance around and wag your entire body when you feel joyful or energized. Like a dog, use your body language, express your inner self, and tell people what's on your mind, because honesty is always appreciated. Let others know when they've invaded your territory. Learn from dogs.…

Dogs should be more looked at like humans, they need love, attention, and some one who takes care of them. If you gave every breed of dog that same affection I just explained there wouldn't be any breed that people are afraid of. Just like human's, we are always comparing other races to which one's are bad, rich, poor, and etc. Its a way of life on how we compare things or try to categorize things to try and make it simpler. I believe it makes things worse for everyone. As we let time go on, we can all see that things change if you give them a chance. Look at our society, it seems like it changes every day for the better.…

Long Long ago, dogs were wolves that would sometimes prey on humans, weird right. Well, the human and dog relationship happened when wolves would venture into human camps and eat food scraps. Soon the wolves had pups and passed some of that boldness to them. They passed their boldness to hang around human camps. Afterwards wolves kept coming to human camps, they made good guardians and protected them from dangerous animals. So generation to generation wolves were starting to get closer and closer to humans. Later eventually, their bodies grew smaller, their ears grew floppier and they became less aggressive. Dogs are now used to help humans in jobs, like sniffing out drugs or bombs, they do human jobs a little bit easier. Some dogs were mummified with their owners because they were so prized by their…

If you are sad or hurt they will curl up with you (sometimes), and who doesn’t that make happy? Some dogs are trained to help people and they are called therapy dogs. Therapy dogs help the blind across the street or wherever they need to go. What is going to happen if a robber comes and tries to do something to your house? Well thats where the dogs come in they can protect you or your things. There a many more awsome things that dog can do. These are only the…

The loyalty you find in a dog is incomparable to that of anyone else; a bond is created that is both genuine and unique. For example, they can sense when you are not feeling well.
