INTRODUCTION
There is a Need
Does school prepare children for the real world? "Study hard and get good grades and you will find a high-paying job with great benefits," my parents used to say. Their goal in life was to provide a college education for my older sister and me, so that we would have the greatest chance for success in life. When T finally earned my diploma in 1976-graduating with honors, and near the top of my class, in accounting from Florida State University-my parents had realized their goal. It was the crowning achievement of their lives. In accordance with the "Master Plan," I was hired by a "Big 8" accounting firm, and I looked forward to a long career and retirement at an early age. My husband, Michael, followed a similar path. We both came from hardworking families, of modest means but with strong work ethics. Michael also graduated with honors, but he did it twice: first as an engineer and then from law school. He was quickly recruited by a prestigious Washington, D.C., law firm that specialized in patent law, and his future seemed bright, career path welldefined and early retirement guaranteed. Although we have been successful in our careers, they have not turned out quite as we expected. We both have changed positions several times-for all the right reasons-but there are no pension plans vesting on our behalf. Our retirement funds are growing only through our individual contributions. Michael and I have a wonderful marriage with three great children. As I write this, two are in college and one is just beginning high school. We have

All throughout my educational career I had never taken the time to reflect on what school really meant to me and if school was made optional would I still attend? After reading the essay “Against School,” by John Taylor Gatto a series of questions began to arise in my head. Is school really that necessary? Is it really the only way for a person to be successful in life? According to John Taylor Gatto schools are nothing but merely “laboratories of experimentation on young minds, drill centers for the habits and attitudes that corporate society demands (38).” After reading Gatto’s essay I must say I agree. The educational school system in the U.S…

According to your social status, it determines what education you will receive. The author Jean Anyon states in her article “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work” that “In the two working-class schools, work is following the steps of a procedure. The procedure is usually mechanical, involving rote behavior and very little decision making or choice”(7). She establishes is that the education in the working-class schools are about being obedient and following orders without any decisions involved. With little decision-making skills, people will most likely end up working jobs at “platforms, storerooms, and stockroom” (7). At this rate, the lower classes will have less of a chance in improving their lifestyle and joining the upper class status. The author Anyon talks about education within the middle class schools. She states in her article “In the middle-class schools, work is getting the right answer...One must follow the directions in order to get the right answer, but the directions often call for some figuring, some choices, some decision making”(10). Anyon explains that among the middle class they are mentally prepared to work as “printers, carpenters, plumbers, and construction” that involve with little decision…

Justin Pope argues, in a Remediation Nation article, that even with a high school diploma, students find themselves unprepared for college’s academic challenges. He states that it is a tough lesson to learn the hard way “through experience” for many students now arriving on campus. To support his suggestion he includes a study that one in three students entering college have to enroll in remedial courses in order to continue with their level of education. Another point Pope makes is that of recently enrolled student, Christina Jeronimo; she said that she wishes that there exists a gap between the demands from college work to high school work, that sometimes high school instructors baby their students. In my experience I cannot agree nor disagree because I have not yet made it to a college level school; however, I agree with this author because it seems to be a great issue for both educators and students to have to first prepare themselves after high school. I also agree because I would not appreciate finding myself having to spend money on remedial classes after high school. One of the points that made me reconsider my opinion on this topic was a comment on Jeronimo that she wishes she would have tried a little harder in high school. Another point of reconsideration was that on average remedial classes run to $2,000 at community colleges and $2,500 at universities. Last point for reconsideration is that students fall behind in their life plans and find themselves stuck financially. “The bill to colleges and taxpayers for trying to bring them up to speed on material they were supposed to learn in high school comes to between $2.3 billion and $2.9 billion annually.” And “These students come out of high school really misled. They think they're prepared. They got a 3.0 and got through the curriculum they needed to get admitted, but they find what they learned wasn't adequate.” Are good quotes that I would use in my essay. This author is a good credible and otherwise…

I believe that school is not important. My proposal goes out to all the parents and government officials in Tallahassee who designed the school system. Millions of teenagers and kids spend 5 days a week attending school where they have to sit around in class, detesting those Mondays and wasting their time away. Of course there are going to be students who want learn and accelerate in school but there are going to be plenty of them who believe school isn’t necessary. K- 8 are important to me and I feel like those are essential years every person should go through. However, I don’t believe it is right for teenagers to be required to go to school after 8th grade. Many kids don’t need the excess educational curriculum. It is irrelevant as well…

During my first college experience, at eighteen years old, I truly believed I had too many things taking time away from schoolwork. After all, I was busy with a healthy social life, a 15 hour a week job driving the beverage cart at a golf course, and a boyfriend who lived an hour away. It has been fifteen years since that naïve undergrad first entered college. The social life has become play dates, the 15 hour a week part time job has turned into a full time “grown up “ job, and that boyfriend has been my husband for eleven years. As an adult learner, there are obviously several obstacles to completing my education. The most important of these are my home, husband, and children.…

And “Just as our present is the result of our past, so our future will be the result of our present. Every minute of every day we are weaving threads that will make the cloth of future.” How we let the past affects us matters as to what the future brings. We cannot fully control what will happen in the future nor can we totally be in command to the things that will only be coming. But a huge portion of what’s going to happen relies on the way we handle our present. Much of what our future brings depends on how much we let our past made an impact in our lives.…
