Do you think Macbeth is the most interesting character?

“The most interesting character in the play is Macbeth himself.” Do you agree? Why?
The play Macbeth contains a contrast of characters with many different views and values, but the one character that you can’t forget about is Macbeth himself. Macbeth is by far the most interesting character as he perfectly represents the tragic hero, a great and honest man who is held in the highest regards but throughout the play has a great downfall all due to his own doing.
The decline of Macbeth’s mental health was a major contributor to making Macbeth the most interesting character. From the very first scene you are introduced to Macbeth as a loyal and noble man, ‘What he hath lost noble Macbeth hath won’ as said by King Duncan (scene I, act II). What makes it interesting is that as we read on, Macbeth’s psychological condition deteriorates, but as this happens he starts to notice the consequences of the actions he has taken (such as killing his best friend Banquo) is taking a great toll on him, but it is too late. A sign that he is mentally becoming ‘unstable’ is when he is at the banquet and he sees the ghost of the dead friend Banquo, which whom he had betrayed, Shakespeare uses imagery in this scene (scene III, act IV) to emphasise that alter ego inside Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth creates the part of Macbeth that makes him evil; she is a reason too why he is such an interesting character. It is extremely twisted and fascinating how much power and influence Lady Macbeth really has over Macbeth, she is able to make him do whatever she wants and she only has to use the power of words. This is why Macbeth is so interesting because he can go into to battle and defeat great kings and army’s whom are holding lethal weapons, but when he gets back home he can simply be brought down by the thoughts and words of his wife, a good example of this is when lady Macbeth says ‘And live like a coward in thine own esteem?’ (Act I, scene VII) she has told him that he is to coward to kill and will he now always be a coward; he isn’t enough of a man. That’s basically all it took, no weapon, no threats, just words and at this Macbeth agrees to murder King Duncan. This last quote is an example of a rhetorical questions, Shakespeare has used this technique to help Lady Macbeth get Macbeth thinking without actually answering back.
Macbeth has multiple encounters with supernatural forces; these three ugly sisters are a strong contender to why Macbeth is the most interesting character in the play. We are first introduced to the witches in the opening scene, Act I where they are meeting, the next time we see them is when Macbeth and Banquo discover them in Act I, scene III. The reason this role of supernatural makes Macbeth so interesting is because they themselves do not force nor make him do anything, they have no ‘real’ power over Macbeth, when you think about it Macbeth isn’t there victim he has just simply acted on his own desires, evidence of this is a quote from Banquo ‘The instruments of darkness tell us truths, The instruments of darkness tell us truths, Win us with honest trifles’ (Act I, scene III) meaning that often the instruments of darkness tell us want we want, to win us over and so in result we harm ourselves. It is intriguing to why these witches appear, as they don’t use magic or power to make Macbeth kill Duncan it seems as if they are a representation of Macbeth’s darkest wishes and desires, once Macbeth has heard their prophecies it is what he does next that decides his fate. Shakespeare has used metaphors in this scene; an example of this is the quote above by Banquo ‘The instruments of darkness’ reefing to the supernatural forces that influence Macbeth.
In conclusion there is no doubt that Macbeth himself is the most interesting character, throughout the play there are a number of contributors and factors that combine with Macbeths character to make him so fascinating. First the witches ‘plant the seed’ with the help of Lady Macbeth who waters the darkest desires of Macbeth to then be sprinkled off with the decline of Macbeths mentality.
