In Britain, one of the fundamental concerns of sociology, as expressed by Furlong, et al, (2006), is to understand and conceptualise social divisions in the ways in which they are reproduced and their impact on life chances. In this context, social class, education, employment and income distribution, gender, race, disability, health, housing conditions, neighbourhood quality, generation and spatial divisions have all been central to sociological enquiry into how equal are people’s life chances. Similarly, a leading sociologist, Max Weber, (1864-1920) asserted that a person’s class position influences many areas of his life, especially his life chances. This essay will discuss the effect of social divisions on the experience of equal life chances in Britain and the effectiveness of the factors that influence a person’s life chances. It will also attempt to give the diverse views of social scientists before and after the 21st century on the role of many factors in determining life chances.
Life chances, in a social research report conducted by Johnson and Kossykf, (2008), observed that it could cover a range of opportunities that people can experience as they Become adults and into their later life. These opportunities include, for example, the likelihood of being in employment over individuals’ lifetimes, the chances of obtaining educational qualifications and the chances of good physical and mental health. That is, life chances of individuals are closely related to the socio-economic characteristics of their families, such as parental income, socio-economic status (SES) and parental education.
