Week 6 The DNP Project

Describe a needs or change related to a practice environment, include your rationale for why this situation warrants attention
Explain how your participation in a specific professional organization could be beneficial as you attempt to affect positive change in your identified practice environment through your DNP project

I believe a significant practice problem is that many nurses do not see the need to advance their education after obtaining an R.N. By continuing to have the triple level entry into practice we do not have the control of the practice development that other professional practices may have. The other professional practices have entry degree requirements that are reflective of the expectation that each requires. It is difficult to persuade a nurse to incur debt and expense to obtain a DNP when they believe as an RN, the benefits do not outweigh the work required. They don’t see how the investment of further education can change the future of nurses. Nurses may not want to give up the opportunity to work at the bedside and do not want the politics of management. The
DNP offers the opportunity to maintain the clinical expertise and further education.

The AACN recommendations that the entry as a NP by the DNP will assist with this, as many nurses do want to obtain the NP licensure and level of practice. Another attractive measure of the DNP is the ability of the clinical nurse to stay at the bedside of the patient. Many nurses are not attracted to administration or education and have resisted advanced practice unless its clinical in nature.
I am particularly interested in nursing education and have experience as a clinical education instructor at the undergraduate level. The national organization that I would join must have a strong educational component and outreach to encourage nurses to obtain advanced education.

    As society’s pushing for a demand in higher education, we are seeing the requirements for nursing increase as well. As most facilities are phasing out the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the Associates degree RN is becoming the entry level of nursing.     The ADN is a two-year program that provides individuals the opportunity to provide entry level nursing care under the title Registered Nurse. Its initial purpose during the 1950s was to temporarily fill the nursing shortage gap after World War II. Nurses prepared at the Associate-degree level are expected to develop competence in safe and effective patient care including delegation and patient teaching. Today, ADN programs have grown exponentially across the nation and have become integrated in the curriculum of community colleges all over the U.S. The standard BSN program is typically 4 years in length and it exposes the student to evidence- based research, theory and science.     Never has there been a complaint about the information taught or the education acquired. Most nurses understand the importance of maintaining their level of practice through lifelong learning. If this writer encountered a nurse that feels that continuing education is unnecessary, they will hear an encouraging argument to make the case in favor of education. It would be of interest to understand why this nurse does not want to obtain the credits. Once an understanding is obtained, possibly gear your conversation towards the objections to further their education.     According to Aiken (2003), in 1950, 92% of new RNs graduated came from hospital diploma programs, whereas, by 2001, only 3% graduated from hospital diploma programs, and 61% came from associate degree programs, and 36% were baccalaureate program graduates. These statistics show a drastic change in educational background over the past years. However, why do we still have a nursing shortage? These numbers might reflect nurses graduating from school with less academic standards, which facilitate the completion of programs.
