Children in Divorce
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, divorce is a legal dissolution of marriage by a court or other competent body, or according to forms recognized in the country, nation, or tribe. Individuals going through divorce are usually in a difficult situation, but it is also difficult for any children that are involved with the divorce. The effects aren’t always shown or may not be seen right away in some cases. The primary problem of children involved in divorce cases is the effects, both short term and long term, it may have on a child because one can argue that the results may vary.
There have been numerous amounts of studies that focus on children in divorces regarding their development and their attitude from before and after the divorce. The psychological problems that children face when being in the middle of a divorce are major because instead of one united family there’s now a separation of parents and time split between those who are divorced; this can leave the child in an awkward situation. Some of the issues that children face with the separation of their parents are depression, anxiety, aggression, delinquency, and self-blame for the parents getting divorced.
Even with all the research done about the effects divorce might have on a child, many can argue that every child is different and might not go through the same thing as another child. According to the book, Delinquency: Mainstream and Cross Current by J. Fuller, children go through the most issue in the divorce process because the family is no longer together and the child must now go back and forth between parents and split spending time with each parent. He also states that the children age also plays a key role in what effects and changes happen to the child.
