17 June 2010 Miscommunication in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants.” The story “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway is described through the conversations of a couple which proves the miscommunication and lack of understanding between the couple. In my paper I am going to show how the relationship between the American and the girl failed to be a good relationship due to this lack of communication and understanding.
The American and the girl were waited for the Madrid train in a station bar. Both are talking about a serious problem which is the main reason to make their cheerful life monotonous. Gradually it is revealed that the young girl is pregnant and the American is trying to convince her to have an abortion.
The American and the girl Jig are not married and their relationship seems superficial. The girl asked the man which drink they should drink while sitting at a table in the shade. However, the man replied that the day is pretty hot and “Let’s drink beer.” It seems that they have lack of communication as well as lack of depth in their relationship. Otherwise, the man should reply what the girl wants to listen.
The American could not understand the girl’s point of view as well. The imagination about the line of hills of the girl is the hills are looking like white elephants. On the contrary, the man could not try to find out the meaning of the girl’s imagination. He immediately answered that he never seen white elephant. It proves that the American does not want to realize as well as to appreciate the girl’s point of view.
In addition, the American also could not try to understand the feelings of the girl as she got pregnant accidently. They had no good understanding with each other. When they were trying another drink the American told Jig how the system of abortion is very simple and there is no point to worry and it is a natural process. He added that he will go and

Men tend to take over a conversation no matter what the subject. In the short story, The American man overpowers Jig in the conversation. The choice of words he uses to try to exert control over Jig is the main way he takes over. The American man uses words like "perfectly" and "simply" to describe their situation. He uses those words because he is not the one who has to go through with "the operation". Jig has to go through it and she knows it is not that simple. The man is also the one to bring up "the operation" i.e., abortion. Jig happens to be talking about the beer they are drinking saying, “It’s lovely” (Hemingway 276). The man…

The “Man” is encouraging her to have an abortion and states “ I know you wouldn’t mind it, Jig. It’s really not anything. Its just to let the air in.”(401). The “Man” is implying that an abortion would be no big deal and further states, “ I’ll go with you and stay with you all the time. They just let the air in and then it’s all perfectly natural. That’s the only thing that bothers us. It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy.” The term “natural” used by man in this statement implies the abortion is a natural thing to do. This statement gives the impression that the “Man” is attempting to lure Jig into his way of thinking using their surroundings. Jig is disenchanted from nature and what it represents in the story and sees it from his “simple” solution to a clear problem. Their unhappiness is seen in their drinking of alcoholic beverages to dull the pain and feel like nothing is wrong, and implies their inability to face reality. Gazing across the landscape the “Girl” expresses how the hills look like white elephants. This statement is used as a distraction for the so-called “white elephant in the…

The American sees it as a problem that can easily be solved as where Jig sees it as a beautiful experience. Jig looks to the hills and says; "they look like white elephants" by saying "white elephants" she is referring to her pregnancy. Jig continues to say, "They're lovely hills" meaning having a baby will be lovely. The American tires to minimize the beauty of it and explains, "It's really not anything. They just let the air in." Even though the conflict is the man and Jigs issue with keeping the baby or getting an abortion, it is ultimately up to Jig to decide. Towards the end of the story when the man gets the final say about the abortion, the girl says, "I'll scream." Meaning she has made up her mind and she does not want to hear anymore from the…

As the story starts we see a young couple. At first glance it is a stereotypical gender couple. The man is in charge. He does the ordering for them He makes the decisions as to what and how much they will drink. She allows him to be in charge (letting him be the stronger one the male). She even ask him “What should we drink?” (Hemingway, 2012, p.4) She lets him be in control. Like most women of the time period (1920 's -1930 's) Jig wants to to please her man. She is willing to do this at any cost. Jig would even have an abortion if that 's what it will take to please him. “And if I do it you 'll be happy and things will be like they were and you 'll love me?” (Hemingway ,2012, p.55)…

Symbolism starts at the very beginning with the title “Hills Like Whit Elephants.” A white elephant is a burdensome possession and an expensive undertaking, as is a baby. In paragraph ten, the girl says, “they look like white elephants.” This simile is referring to the hills. Later in the story, the girl retracts that comment, hinting that she may want to keep the baby.…

Divergent is a provocative novel that is my current treasured read. This dystopian, Sci-fi novel written by Veronica Roth is an exclusive novel that captivates readers instantaneously. This novel begins with Tris Prior, an Abnegation born child, thinking about the choice that will change her life just days away from the choosing ceremony. Tris Prior is a short, blond girl that is impulsive yet kind. In fact, she is intelligent in her own manner. Tris has a tendency to think through situations extremely well (this skill is very useful in the world she lives in). The world Tris Prior lives in is separated into 5 different factions. Each faction is based on who you are as a person. The Dauntless are known to be the brave, the Abnegation are…
