n Tea was discovered in China in 2737 BC. Its popularity spread to Japan, other parts of Asia and Europe, before Peter Stuyvesant introduced it to America in 1650. There are six varieties of tea: black; green; white; yellow; oolong and pu-erh, and according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, more than 3 million tons of tea is produced annually; the majority of it from China, India, Kenya, Sri-Lanka and Turkey. Tea is distributed through retail, wholesale and distribution channels. Distributors stock large inventories to supply to large retail vendors such as grocery stores, hotels, and restaurant chains. Mr. G.P.Goenka takes over operations of the Group’s tea gardens, and lays the foundation for their professional management, which has today made the company a force to reckon with in the tea industry. Duncan Goenka Group is today highly diversified with 20 operating companies and a workforce of 40,000 employees. Its present turnover of Rs. 20 billion, places it amongst the top ten industrial groups in the country. In its millennium avatar, the Group has identified four thrust areas - power generation and other core sector projects, agro-based ventures, chemicals and petrochemicals and frontier sciences like software and biotechnology. A target of Rs. 100 billion has been set for achievement by 2000 A.D. Mr. G.P Goenka has been appointed a whole-time Director from 1st August, 1999. 2000 - The Rs 125-crore Duncans Gleneagles Hospital, a 50:50 joint venture between Duncans Industries Ltd and Gleneagles of Singapore, will be fully operational by mid-May. Duncans Industries is getting a new packet tea head. And the new man is Pinaki Pan, former general manager (eastern) of Glaxo Smithkline. Duncans Industries which has relaunched its flagship brand Double Diamond CTC tea bags which they propose to launch in the major metros as part of its strategy to build and reposition existing brands. 2003 High Court okays Phosphate Chemicals' wind up petition over Duncan India. 2007 Duncans Industries Ltd has appointed Mr. Debadatta Sengupta, as an Additional Director of the Company with immediate effect.
