Distance learning is education obtained by learners who are separated from their tutor by time and distance. It has become an essential model for learning among most islands in the pacific region. University of the South Pacific is a regional University serving twelve island countries: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshalls Islands, Nauru, Niue, Solomon Island, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Samoa. This university delivers distant learning to student with printed materials, online learning management system (moodle), audio and video conferencing through USPNet and sometimes provides local tutors. In this essay it will be discussed if distance learning is the best mode for students in the pacific region in the contrast of its advantages and disadvantages. Firstly it will explain its advantages following with its disadvantages of distance learning. To begin with, distance education has lower cost of learning and training. Most people find it cheaper than face-to-face acquisition. For example, individuals who would like to have further education on tertiary level but find face to face learning expensive can consider the alternative form of distance learning. According to this year’s University of the South Pacific’s fee schedule, “on campus students pay approximately sixty to one hundred eighty dollars extra in course units than students who are studying through distance and flexible learning” (http://www.usp.ac.fj). Distance learning also prevents students from paying for dormitory fee and they can study from the comforts of their homes.
