Are myths, fables, legends, and tall tales different from one another? Use examples to explain why.  Yes, myths, fables, legends, and tall tales are different from one another. A myth is a story that explains and organizes the world through narrative. The word myth is used to mean something that is not factually true. Myths may use stories to illustrate how people should act. The story of the arrow shooting Cupid is a story of a myth. A fable is a short story that contains a moral about human behavior and tries to teach someone how to behave. A good example of a fable is the story about the tortoise and the hare. The moral of the story is “Slow but steady wins the race.” Legends are usually associated with a particular event or person. Myths and legends both contain religious content, but a myth takes place outside time and legends are rooted in a particular time and place. Stories about Robin Hood and King Arthur are a popular example of a legend. Tall Tales are fictional stories that stretch the truth. Examples of tall tales are the stories about Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, and Davy Crockett. The characters are completely fictional and they have larger than life characteristics. Sometimes the characters are real, but the stories are told to the extreme.
