Discuss A Book Or A Written Article That You Particularly Enjoyed Or That Has Had An Impact On You

Old Man and the Sea, one of my favorite novels from Ernest Hemingway, have various impacts on me. In the novel, the main character Santiago truly exemplifies the characteristic of insistence; on the other hand, Ernest Hemingway also tells the audience that insistence cannot also lead to success. To begin with the characteristic of insistence, Santiago, the fishermen, in the novel never quit although he faces dilemma. Fortuneless, for instance, he could not even catch one fish; nevertheless, he remains consistent in his fishing life. To be more specific, Santiago still wakes up early in the morning and goes fishing every day. Even though he is too unfortunate to catch a fish and is taunted and teased by other fishermen, he does not quit fishing. Santiago’s characteristic truly shows me that people should not give up no matter whatever obstacles they face. In addition, the novel also influences my view over hard working. In the novel, Santiago tries tremendously hard to catch a fish, and he finally catches a humongous fish on his trip; however, the fish was eaten by sharks. Although he tries his best to defeat the sharks, the remainder is the bone of the fish. This plot demonstrates that no matter how hard people work, people still fail. Consequently, I am edified that I will try my best to accomplish my task, but sometimes I face failure. Nonetheless, I will not collapse but rise back eventually. In conclusion, this novel really influences me tremendously. Although I felt tedious when I first read this novel, I was fascinated and impressed when I read this novel the second time and started thinking outside the box.

Having now finished the story, i would like to say that my overall impression about the book hasn't changed much, it was still a dry and boring book with a plot line that didn't seem to climax much at all but instead had a steady pace with a litte bump here or there. Many will say that they hated the end of the book but I think the book was ended like that with a certain purpose in mind, to make us think what was this book about and why did it end like this?…

A theme that was discussed repeatedly through the seminar was destiny. Nikol explained that destiny drove Santiago to travel all the way to Egypt and then all the way back home at the end of the book. On many pages of the book, the term, “Personal legend” appears; this refers to, “What you always have wanted to accomplish” (23). The only difference between a personal legend and destiny is that someone must desire to accomplish a personal legend. Once passion and desire exists, your personal legend becomes your destiny, a key lesson within the book. Ben brought up how the book in its entirety compares to the story of each and every teenage child growing up and moving to college or starting life in the real world after graduating. Santiago’s journey into wisdom and…

“No one should be alone in their old age, he thought. But it is unavoidable. I must remember to eat the tuna before he spoils in order to keep strong. Remember, no matter how little you want to, that you must eat him in the morning. Remember, he said to himself.” Yet again, Santiago pairs one of his burdens with the optimism that to acutely characterizes him. He freely admits to being a lonely, old man, and yet it is this common theme of determination that presents itself here, yet again, to help the old man overcome his obstacles. He has the mindset that he is going to preserver until the end of time, which literally for him could mean his death. On page 52, he actually confirms this notion, saying “Fish…I’ll stay with you until I am dead.” His pure strength of mind is so unbelievable fortified here that he has no trouble in bluntly admitting to his own likely demise. There is a significant difference between admitting to something, and succumbing to it, however. Santiago In this case, however willing to admit to his flaws and handicaps, is in no way yielding to his own demise. He is ready to give all he’s got in the name of this war of fish versus man. He confirms this fact on page 54 when he says “Fish…I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day…

This novel really stirred my emotions, especially in the beginning. For example, Candelario works at a restaurant owned by a man named Don Gustavo. Candelario is the salad maker and what taught, by Don Gustavo himself, how to make a perfect Caesar salad for his customers. The doctor and his wife came in and both ordered salads and Candelario made the salads exactly to Don’s instructions, but the customers were not pleased. Since they were not pleased Don fired Gustavo on the spot that night. This made me very angered with Don and people like Don. It sucks when you do something right but then someone is displeased so all of a sudden it was the wrong thing to do. In this situation, Don was definitely the bad man and people should…

There comes a point in a person’s life where their personal calling becomes so strong it is nearly impossible to deny. This is what happened to Santiago in the book, The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho. Santiago traveled on a spiritual and self learning adventure that contained many challenging trials. Along the way, he encountered instances where he had to pay a very high price. An example of these instances would be when he had to give up the merchant girl, his sheep, and when he lost all his money on the pursuit for his dream. Even though these events were costly, it did not prevent him from achieving his goal because he had a strong willpower.…

Defeat, according to the Larousse Chambers English Dictionary, is when you are overthrown in a battle, you lose a game and therefore you don't win: you don't gain or reach your goal. As we can see Santiago, in spite of the fact that he persevered and struggled, starving, for three days lost the battle. He couldn't get to his main goal. But , exactly what was his goal, one may ask? He wanted the fish, he was not fishing as a hobby or sport; he planned to sell the fish and get some money to eat, it was his way of surviving. Santiago's only way of income was fishing and he knew that. He mentions: " He was a fish to keep a man all winter."(page 111). Santiago had plans for him already but failed to accomplish them. Some will argue that he won because he gained spiritual victory. This , in a way, is true; but fishing is his job and only way of living. If the case had been different and Santiago was only fishing for his personal entertainment, which wasn't, it could be seen as a new experience or story to tell. But it wasn't. Santiago needed the fish and…

psychology aspect in the old man and the sea In The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway describes an old fisherman and the unfortunate trials he faces as his "luck" runs out. Through the novel, the fisherman, Santiago, replicates Hemingway's ideal man, a noble hero. Hemingway had a Code of Behavior that he himself followed. He had morals that were strict and an appreciation for instinct and human nature. He had a specific way of living life and an understanding of time. He believed in taking risks and acting upon instinct. He believed that a person who followed his Code of Behavior was a noble hero.…

Determination is very important in the process of achieving a goal. Santiago has all the determination he needs when it comes to catching the marlin. “‘Fish’, he said softly, aloud, ‘I’ll stay with you until I am dead’” (Hemingway, 52). Santiago does not worry about his life, because if he does not catch the fish, he considers himself unworthy. Santiago’s pride can only be protected if he catches the enormous marlin. The old Cuban is very determined in his struggle with the fish.…
