Task 3. Discuss issues of equality and diversity and ways to promote inclusion, equality and diversity with your current/future learners. Review other points of referral available to meet the potential needs of your learners.
‘Diversity is defined by ‘otherness’ or those human qualities that are different from our own and outside groups to which we belong, yet are present in other or individuals or groups.’ (University of Maryland, 1995) or, ‘Different individuals valuing each other regardless of skin, intellect, talent or years’ (www.trendenterprises.com)
Once diversity is recognised and understood, promoting equality and inclusion can follow.
Promoting inclusion, diversity and equality should be achieved at two stages;
1. Prior to learning; via advertising or curricula (learning providers’ websites, literature), application, introduction or induction and any contact with the learning provider prior to the actual course. 2. During learning; a variety of techniques can be used;
• Partner different abilities or skills so learners can learn from, and have a chance to work with, each other. • Form and re-form groups to vary members.
• When answers are to be given through a spokesperson of the group, nominate a different learner each time • Encourage learners to ask questions of the teacher and each other whilst respecting others’ opinions. • Establish ground rules including respect and dignity. • Use non-discriminatory language.
• Use resources that reflect the diversity of the group and that are adaptable to meet individual needs. • Continuously formatively assess learners to give equal opportunity by monitoring progress and contribution. • Employ evaluation methods to give learners the opportunity to evaluate training.
