• What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination-Pg.61, (Schaefer, 2012). - The denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons.
Discrimination is the actual results or impact because of discard to one’s rights. Also includes pre-conceived judgment or opinions without out sufficient grounds of knowledge. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary) M-W.com.
Discrimination is different than being prejudice or stereotyping because it is the actual result or outcome of prejudice or stereotyping. Being prejudice or stereotyping is based on opinion, religious beliefs, cultures or personal observation about a person or group which is a direct result of discrimination.
When a person is “prejudice’ or “stereotype” they automatically have assumed an “image” about a person without sufficient evidence directly related to that person. Have formed an opinion because of their own personal issues, beliefs, traditions, culture, or even the knowledge obtain within their family communication or others they are directly associated with such as groups, and peer related.
• What are the causes of discrimination?
I personally believe that the majority of discrimination is because of the lack of education. Simply not knowing and having proper reason to “not” discriminate because we have not been educated about it. I also believe that fear plays a major role in the cause of discrimination. Whether it is a person or a group of people anytime there is someone or something “new”, we as a society or an individual generally become afraid of the change, good or bad. The fear itself may cause direct issues and the results are generally discriminatory.
The cause of discrimination may include many different resources. A person or group, whether it comes from an individual or a group. Causes may include race, ethnical backgrounds, or religious beliefs. Discrimination may also be a result of what a person has been taught at home or by other people, and what they “have not’ been educated about in regards to issues or concerns about ‘discrimination.
Basically I believe the major cause of discrimination is lack of knowledge and fear. Not knowing the truth and afraid of change.
• How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another? How are they different?
Discrimination may be faced the same in regards to employment because of (gender,ex:female),as to (disability,ex:,Institutional discrimination.).
Pg.65, (Schaefer, 2012). “Institutional Discrimination”. - Denial of equal right to individual groups, resulting from normal operations of society.
There are many people who can equally and constructively perform the same task in the same employment position. However, due to the fact that you are a female, you may not get hired to do the same job as a male. If you do get hired, there will probably still be limits and restrictions simply based on the fact that you are not a male.
There are wide varieties in the job market for employment opportunity. if you have been institutionalized in the past, there are restrictions and limits for hiring as well as promotion or advancement.
I think the results are the same as far as you will eventually “get employment”, however the pay and promotions will definitely be different based on these types of discrimination.
Another difference is that if you are hired where the majority of employers are the same race or culture, then you may have a better chance for promotion by the specific employer verses a person who has the same discrimination placed on them but are of a different race or cultural background.
The same may be if the employer and the company “respect” your work and see you as an individual, then that may be considered above being “discriminated”. It just depends.

Discrimination can come in all shapes and sizes. It can happen in everyday life and also in the work place. A lot of discrimination comes from ignorance, uneducated, stereotypes, and fear. These things do not excuse the behavior but are clearly things that can be changed. Some of these behaviors come from learned traits as a child and embedded in us in our upbringing. The community and media play a big part as well. The peers we surround ourselves with also influence us more then we may think. When something is different then what we are used to, the unknown scares us and placing prejudice in the place of the fear makes it easier to cope with. At which point this leads to discrimination to different degrees.…

I truly believe that discrimination honestly comes from lack of education and from preconceived ideas that people that are from minorities will drop property values, that people of color are not as educated as others, and that minorities are criminals and or bring with them criminal activity. Educating ourselves and others can and will help to stop discrimination. No matter how much we do try and…
